Ecotrition Bites: An Interesting Small Animal Treat
Written: Aug 1, 2012
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:Cluster format, decent price, most animals love them.
Cons:Some clusters are broken, can be hard to find.
The Bottom Line: If you are looking for a small animal treat, the EcoBites are packed with goodies.
Trying to find treats that all of the small animals will like can be a little bit of a problem; more so when there are new fosters in the group. Having an established clan of guinea pigs it can be easier to foster abandoned or no longer wanted cavy than to try to do it solo. Some of them haven't had much human interaction and others are extremely leery about being handled. Snacks are a great way to get them socialized but they are not something that you can of overboard with or use as a replacement for pellets. The Ecotrition Bites are a nice pick for small animals and even though they are marketed to different species, the ones for rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas are something that hamster and rats will love too. Honey is the binder and sweetener used for the Bites so you need to be careful with the long hair piggies because they could end up with pieces stuck in their fur. These aren't as hearty as the snack sticks or logs from other companies but the cluster format of them makes it something that they can push around and pick at when they want something. These can cause a huge mess if you have an alpha male that tackles snacks like this and destroys them. Sometimes they will do that to humble a new male or to make it easier for the sows to get at the center piece. Most of the time it's them showing off. No male cavy enter the house until they are neutered so I have no idea who they are trying to impress. It contains the usual snack items like oatmeal, groats, sunflower seeds, whole corn, wheat middlings and millet. The clusters have different shapes to them but you are going to end up with a lot of broken pieces and loose pieces at the bottom of the bag. You can dump that in with the pellet food if you want. Almost all of the guinea pigs love these, there are a couple that sniff them but don't go crazy for them. Since this is something that is a decent size it can be used for other animals that come my way that need a temporary home. The bags are resealable but I don't leave them in the bag, the zipper slide isn't all that reliable so I put them in a glass jar or in another plastic bag. If you are worried about them sticking together or attracting ants you can refrigerate them. You can get the bags at most of the large pet stores for about $2.50. The price is average for this kind of a treat but you have to make sure that your small animals are going to like it. Some might want something with more fruits and vegetables in it. If you hand feed them snacks you might want to try to add a little bit of peanut butter to a corner of it if it is the first time you are giving it to them. As mentioned, these can be mess so if you have cavy that hide treats or drag them all over the place, keep an eye on these when you dole them out. ^V^ © Freak369 - 2012 ^V^ Kaytee Guinea Pig Healthy Bits Kaytee Honey Treat Stick Vitakraft Fruit Kracker Sticks Super Pet Guinea Pig Kabob Kaytee Chunky Daily Blend
