Stylin' backpack that even daddy won't be embarrassed to carry

Written: Jun 17 '03
Pros:Sturdy, inexpensive, stylish. Holds a decent amount.
Cons:Only one pocket will fit Avent bottles, hard to reach stuff at bottom
The Bottom Line: This is a good backpack diaper bag. It’s not outrageously priced, and it is tough enough to handle heavy use.

My husband is a stay at home dad. Since he was the one that would do most of the diaper bag toting, we decided to get a diaper bag that did not scream “diaper bag!” with garish colors and nursery designs. We also decided that a backpack would be easier to carry than a shoulder strap type bag.

What is it?

This is a backpack diaper bag. Ours came in solid black with a tan suede flap over the top of the elastic drawstring opening at the top. It comes with three bottle holders on the inside, two on the outside, one out of mesh. There’s also a large pouch on the outside, a zipper side opening (opens to the full interior of the backpack, not a pocket) several interior pockets, a clear plastic zippered pouch, and a reusable diaper change pad.

The good

The backpack is fairly comfortable, even when packed very full.

The side zipper allows for easy access to diapers, but it didn’t tend to spill things, even when we forgot to zip it back up.

Durable construction. We haven’t had any problems with the bag falling apart, even after over a year of hard use.

Roomy - this bag regularly carries four cloth diapers, a change of clothing, some snacks, a novel for daddy to read, baby wipes, some ointment, a sippy cup, plastic baggies, a larger diaper change pad, several toys, first aid kit, etc.

Stylish - It’s backpack enough to make daddy feel comfortable lugging it around.

The clear plastic zippered bag inside – this allows us to put things like ipecac syrup, diaper rash ointment, or sunscreen where it won’t get all over the other contents of the bag.

It’s hard for a toddler to figure out how to empty. Our daughter likes to drag the bag around, but so far, she hasn’t been able to pull out the contents.

The bad

The mesh bottle holder on the outside fits Avent bottles, but the others do not, outside or inside. This is also a problem with sippy cups, which also tend to be even wider, and the Avent sippies don’t fit even in the mesh bag. If you don’t use bottles, or use a more traditionally shaped brand, this is probably not an issue for you.
When our daughter was still using bottles, my husband would usually put one bottle in the outside mesh carrier, and if he felt he was going to be out later, he’d put a capped bottle inside the bag, rolled in the spare set of clothing, which usually kept it cool for longer, anyway.

The diaper change pad is pretty small. It’s nylon, small enough for baby’s bottom with very little wiggle room, and thinly padded. We swapped ours out for a larger pad, so there’s enough room for a squirmy child.

Even with the side pouch, it’s still sometimes hard to get things that are hiding in the bottom of the bag.

Overall

We really like this bag. We still use it with our now 18 month old, and we’ll probably use it with any future progeny. If you like the idea of a simple backpack diaper bag, this is a good one to consider. It’s not outrageously priced, and it is tough enough to handle heavy use.
