Very sweet, attractive bassinet, but limited use

Pros:Attractive, light colors and bentwood look go with more modern decor

Cons:Extremely limited use, somewhat wobbly

The Bottom Line: Worth the money I spent on it, would not have purchase it at full retail.

We are on baby number two, and although I've read all the warnings about buying bassinets (i.e., you'll only use one for a month or two), I couldn't resist purchasing this product. I was able to buy it on sale when a local store went out of business so I paid less than $100 for my bassinet, while they commonly retail for $120-$140.

There is a fair amount of assembly required when you purchase this and my husband, who has quite a lot of carpentry work in his background, was able to put it together in about a half hour. The box wasn't terribly heavy, although I wasn't able to move or load the box by myself as I was about 5 mos. along when I made the purchase. It was too unweildy to manage by myself. All the parts were provided so there weren't any unpleasant surprises.

As other reviews may have pointed out, this is not a piece of furniture that will impress you with its stability or sense of strength or weight. It feels wobbly and like it won't hold up to heavy use. However, an infant is not going to jump up and down in this, and if you are not moving the bassinet between rooms on a daily basis (or if you do so in a very gentle manner), it should hold up reasonably well. It is not easily dismantled or collapsible, so don't think you can travel with this or take it down and store it easily. If you plan on storing it for subsequent babies, keep the box.

I decided to buy this because we were in an apartment and didn't have room for a crib. However, we moved before the baby arrived to a home with multiple levels and I thought I'd use the bassinet either in our room after the baby came home from the hospital OR keep the bassinet in one of our living rooms so she could nap while I was in the same room. Our baby was just under 7 lbs when she came home from the hospital and she slept in the bassinet next to my side of the bed for the first month. We also used a sleep positioner in the bassinet to keep her positioned on her side (rather than on her back as is commonly recommended - she has acid reflux and can gag in her sleep). This arrangement worked out well. I liked putting her in the cradle b/c it seemed like a cozy environment for her, and seemed safer to me than putting her in bed with us.

The bottom mattress of the bassinet can be removed which makes for easy sheet changes (although I just put a waterproof crib pad in the bassinet and kept my baby swaddled so we have not needed to launder the sheets extensively). I was also able to raise the head of the mattress by putting a support under it - again to aid our child who fights acid reflux.

After only a few weeks of use, I transitioned our daughter to her crib in her room across from our room. (For us, that meant more sleep for everyone.) The bassinet is now in the family room in the lower level. Our daughter gained weight and length pretty fast and although she still fits in the bassinet at 11-plus lbs., she is not happy in there for any length of time because she is already moving around quite a bit and ends up rolling to one side or the other in the bassinet. I have to lock the rocking motion - that is easy to do, but I think she feels too confined in there.

I made the mistake of thinking that the rocking motion of the bassinet was something you could turn on and off -- like a battery operated rocker or swing. That is not the case, you have to rock the bassinet yourself, although you can also lock the rocking mechanism so that the bassinet doesn't move as much. This is important as the baby gets bigger and can move from side to side. My daughter is big enough at 11 lbs. that if she moves at all from side to side, the bassinet will lean to one side or the other and she ends up rolling and getting trapped against the side of the bassinet. Not good - so I have to lock it down. Even with the lock, there is still some motion, but not nearly as much. She didn't respond as well to the rocking motion anyway - she'd much rather be held!

The only battery operated feature on this product is the music which plays "Twinkle Little Star." There is an on/off switch and a volume adjustment. Overall, the quality of the sound is nothing to brag about - you are better off to play a CD than to try soothing your child to something that sounds like one of those holiday cards that have the music chip in them that plays when you open the card. Seriously, that is the sound quality - very cheap and annoying.

The fabric and quilting that comes with the basinet is of decent quality - not heavyweight with stellar construction - but nice enough. It can all be removed for laundering, but not without taking apart the basinet, so if you have a baby prone to lots of vomiting or explosive diapers, you might find keeping this clean more trouble than it's worth.

The bottom compartment is great. The bassinet is now in our living room, so I keep spare diapers, wipes and changing pads in the bottom. Before the baby was born, we stored a lot of her gifts in the basinet...and that may be the life this product will end up leading in our house...being more of a catch-all for toys, blankies, etc. rather than being a place to keep the baby. I thought we'd use this as a makeshift crib, and perhaps take it to the sitters once I went back to work, replacing it with a pack n' play once the baby got bigger. My sitter is an in-home provider and doesn't want to have to fool with it, so it is staying in our house. I may move it to my father's house so we'll have a makeshift place for her to sleep when we visit...although I have to say, as my daughter gets bigger, I'm not quite comfortable letting her sleep in there without supervision, simply because she tends to roll her face into the sides and I'd be afraid of her suffocating. (Parents worry about all kinds of stuff!!) I'm not sure it would be a suitable place for her to sleep in much past 3 mos. of age...even that might be a stretch.

One other note, the bottom of the sleeping area is hard and there are legs so you can remove the little bassinet part from the rocking mechanism and take it where you like. This requires dissassembling the cradle with a screwdriver, but if you don't have room for the entire unit, it is an option.

Overall, this was an attractive piece of baby furniture, but not the most valuable of the things we purchased. It is limited use for the baby, however, it may transition into a nice toybox later. I'm thinking it will be a good way for my older daughter to store and display her dolls and toys. We'll see...
