This set of 16 snap beads are suggested for ages 1 and up. I definitely agree with the "and up" portion of the age suggestion when it comes to snapping them together. Although, I definitely appreciate my son receiving this as a gift when he turned 1. Because, these beads offer so much more than just snapping them together.
First off, let's talk about the name. They are called "beads", but that brings to mind bead necklaces or bracelets with small,choking hazards. These are big, hollow plastic toys that are around 3.75 inches long. They have a hole on one end and an "outie" piece on the other. That longer "outie" piece snaps into the whole of another piece. Hence "snap beads". But they are very hard to snap into place for a 1 year old. My son didn't start snapping them together on his own until he was well past two. Instead, he would direct me to snap the pieces together for him.
But, these pieces are not just for snapping together. They also offer a tactile experience and help little hands manipulate objects. There are four types of beads in the set. There are four yellow ones that have raised orange squiggly lines. There are four dark blue pieces that have raised, light blue diamonds. There are four red pieces with raised, orange diamonds. And finally we have four dark green pieces with light green, raised squiggly lines. So your child can manipulate and turn these beads in their hands and feel the different raised shapes. It stimulates and develops fine motor skills. And they can match the shapes by type and color, developing patterning and matching skills. My oldest used to just turn and turn these beads in his hands, taking it all in.
After owning this set for 1.5 years, they are still in perfect condition. If they get dirty, I just wash them with a sponge, soap and water. They are also dishwasher safe on the top shelf.
Overall It is a great gift for a one year old. These beads are educational and help build matching and fine motor skills in your little one. I know it might not seem as exciting as all those electronic gadgets out there, but I feel like this is more beneficial in the long run. Now my toddler plays with these beads, connecting them together. And my baby plays with them too, sticking them in his mouth. I would definitely give this as a gift. Great baby toy.
