I'm happy, I've used it at work for over 2 years

Written: Jun 22 '05
  • User Rating: Excellent
  • Ease of Use:
Pros:Excellent text quality, adjustment options, horizontal viewing.
Cons:No vertical adjustment, No DVI-D connection.
The Bottom Line: A great monitor as long as you don't need the DVI-D connection. I would buy it again.

I'm writing this review as I look at this screen right now. I've had this monitor for over 2 years and have been very happy with it.

Screen and color quality:
I'm happy with the 19 inch screen real estate, with the large border around the screen it even makes the screen look a little larger. Even though it is the same size as my Sony DELUXEPRO SDM-X93/B (Black) 19 in. Flat Panel LCD Monitor at home, this just looks bigger.

The monitor came out of the box with zero dead pixels and in over two years none have developed. I use this monitor for mostly word processing, computer programming and some image analysis. Before I decided it was a bad idea to play computer games late at night at work, it handled playing Rise of Nations very well and I thought the images were slightly better than my Sony.

Screen Menus:
The menu for controlling the screen is accessible on the front of the monitor with buttons for: signal1-2, auto, enter, left, right, up, down and power. The menu is very easy to use and has quite a few settings to play around with. One of the nice features is the color temperature menu which allows you to control the K color of the screen. This is useful when the lighting in the room is too yellow or too blue. The menus contain quite a few options including:

Screen
ColorManagement
PowerManager
Others
Information
Language
Exit

I setup the monitor when I first started using it and have done very little adjusting since then.

Text Quality:
I use this monitor all day for reading text and except for the periods where I was working well over 60 hours a week, I never felt like I got eye strain from using this monitor. The text is crisp and clear in the native resolution of 1280 x 1024. The monitor can be switched to many other resolutions, but looks best in the native resolution.

I would say the field of view is a good, but not excellent. Left and right is excellent, with being able to go at least 60 degrees to each side and still see it clearly, which makes sharing with co-workers easy. The vertical field of view is more problematic as going up or down about 45 degrees introduces a noticeable shadow. Normally this is not a problem with monitors, but this monitor has no vertical height adjustment, so you need to be sure you have it eye level or you can start to get eye strain from long periods of usage. The stand is a little short for my taste, but I'm 6'4", so someone 6' or less should have no problem with this.

Game Playing:
I rarely play computer games, but I did play Rise of Nations for a while on this computer and never had any trouble with the monitor keeping up with the action. I know it is not a graphics intense game compared to others so I can't accurately judge the monitor on this attribute.

Drivers:
Monitor Drivers are included on a CD-ROM which is very easy to use and install.

The Basics:
1,280 x 1,024 native screen resolution(Max 1600 x 1200)
0.25 mm dot pitch.
2 - analog HD15 inputs and one cable included
1 - 4 pin USB Type B without cable

Flat panel display / TFT active matrix
Width 47.2 cm
Built-in Devices USB hub
Enclosure Color Black(also comes in Grey)
Compatibility PC, Mac
Weight 9.5 kg
Depth 21.8 cm
Height 47.8 cm
EPA Energy Star Compliant (53 Watts operational/3 Watts sleep)

Summary:
I really like this monitor and as long as you don't need a DVI-D connection and can place the monitor so it is at your eye level, then I would recommend this monitor. We paid over $1000 for this monitor, so it is nice to see the price down around $700 now.
