| Freak369's Full Review: Eldon Crayon Saver |
Do you have a child that loves to draw or doodle with crayons? Sick and tired of picking up tiny bits of crayons that end up on the floor or at the bottom of the backpack? Do yourself a favor and invest a few dollars into one of the coolest inventions the Newell / Eldon Crayon Saver! The name might be a bit confusing so here is the breakdown Eldon is the new name of the Newell Office Products company that also makes the cool colored Space Maker organization cases. I saw this crayon case about a year and a half ago and never gave it much thought since my boys were never one to get into the whole arts and craft scene then I realized that if I had these I could eliminate a lot of frustration when they went to clean out their backpacks after a field trip or day camp. All I had to do was remember where I saw them which was a lot harder than it might seem. Eventually I found them on clearance at Wal-Mart after the back to school sale and picked up a ton of them. I wasnt taking a chance of not being able to find them again!
The Basics
The crayon saver is made of a thick clear plastic with small indentations in the bottom and lid this is where the crayons get snapped in to place to keep them from rolling around. This will hold 24 crayons, 12 in the lid and 12 in the bottom. This makes it great for holding the Crayola 24 Pack or any other brand of crayons while on the way to school, in the car or during a vacation. It might take up a little more space than the cardboard case that they originally come in, but you reduce the risk of them breaking or coming out of the pack. This can also be used to store short colored pencils although some of them arent thick enough to snap into the sections so they might rattle around a little but you wont have to worry about a small child getting poked with the points. Anyone that uses pastels can also take advantage of this case but again, some sizes wont fit perfectly into the sections.
This measures 5 1/2 x 4 x 1 1/2 so it is a great size for knapsacks or backpacks as well as smaller kids overnight bags when they visit grandparents. Since it is made of a hard plastic it will take a lot of abuse without showing any wear and I say this from first hand experience because my kids can be tough little buggers when they are on a field trip or day camp. The front of the case has a nice and sturdy snap lock that is easily opened and closed and locks securely. When you first purchase this there will be a small plastic hang tag at the top of the case, I recommend that you remove this and toss it in the trash so smaller kids arent tempted to play around with it. The label that is on the top of the case peels off easily so you wont have to fight with it or sit there for ten minutes peeling off tiny bits of the sticker. If you have more than one child, there is more than enough room to write their name, classroom and all other information on the top and sides of the case. Occasionally you might have to clean the inside of it to remove small pieces of crayon shavings or other dirt, I usually toss it in the kitchen sink and let it soak for a few minutes then wipe it out with a paper towel.
Id recommend this for any child that loves to color or spends time on the road with mom or dad running errands. If your child carries crayons back and forth with them to school, this crayon saver would really make it easier for them to transport them and keep the crayons in better shape. Since the crayons are snapped in to place inside the crayon case you can pop it open and see if its time to replace them without having to dump them out on the table and slide them back in the box. Since the case is easy to open and close it is suitable for kids of all ages and the hinge will hold up to a lot of use. The ones that the boys have been using during their field trips havent shown any signs of wear yet and they are constantly opening and closing them. The edges of the case are rounded so you wont have to worry if kids start to get a little goofy and start tossing this around. It is made of hard plastic but so far we havent had any life threatening injures [knock wood]. The hinge area is one solid piece of plastic so there isnt any chance of a child getting his or her fingers caught in it.
The Bottom Line
The crayon saver is priced at about $1.49 and in my opinion, its well worth it to keep crayons safe and organized. I purchased a ton of these at Wal-Mart when they were bring there back to school sale to a close and if I remember correctly, I got them for .50 cents a piece. You can never have too many of these around the house and they make great stocking stuffers around the holidays or even for Halloween if you choose to give out treats other than candy. You can find these are most stores that sell crayons and art supplies however Target and Wal-Mart usually have the best prices.
As always, thanks for the visit
