fredrick2003's Full Review: GoldenEye: Rogue Agent for PlayStation 2
This game isn't a remake of the Nintendo 64 classic that brought many friends together for many sleepless nights. While it does share the same genre, it is an entirely different game, not a sequel, not a prequel, not an update. So dont buy this expecting Goldeneye (N64). In fact, I think the name was slapped on so people would automatically think back to all the fond memories they had when they were younger of playing Goldeneye on Nintendo 64. At least, thats what happened to me when I saw the name.
With that being said, the game is ok. Its not bad, but its not good. Meaning, I paid full price, and I dont regret it.
Graphics:
The graphics were bad. Im not going to lie. There is almost a comlpete absence of textures, everything looks just, there... Graphics were not soo good. Worst graphics i've seen in a long time to tell you the truth...
Story:
Well, you were on a mission with James Bond, and he died (in a really dumb way, you'll see what I mean when you play the first level). So you finish your mission, then when you get back, everyone seems to think you were responsible for getting him killed. So you are expelled and you go work for Goldfinger. He gives you your "goldeneye" (which... goes where your eye is) which contains "powers".
Sound:
Decent sound. Nothing mindblowing. You wont notice the sound, which is probobly a good thing, you woudln't want to be distracted by bad sounds.
Gameplay:
The game plays like all the other first person shooters you have seen. You hold 2 guns as well as your starting gun which can be pulled out at any time. You have grenades you can throw, you know, the basics.
You also have the "eye powers" that you can use in both Single and Multiplayer matches. You can freeze somebody, make their weapons malfunction, see through walls, and even become invulnerable for 3 seoncds (3 seconds on multiplayer, until whenever the energy runs out in single player). I loved this addition and it added something unique to what would otherwise be a bland first person shooter experience.
You can play through a decent sized story mode that is pretty fun, and of course there is the multiplayer, which I think is where the games only GOOD points come in.
The multiplayer consists of the standard split screen mode, as well as an online mode, which is absolutely free. When you play online you need to find a room and fill it up with 4 or 8 people (depending on the mode and map) to begin a game, which is sometimes easier said than done. Critics gave this game such terrible reviews not many people went out and bought it. While the game is filling up you are free to run around and kill the other players if you wish, or do what I do, go get a sandwich and eat and wait until that "Waiting for 5 players" becomes "Game starting in 10 seconds".
Overall:
Overall, I think you should at least rent this game, im not saying its a "great" game, its mode of a "decent" game. I woudln't even call it good, I think you should try it if you love FPS's.
