Pros: exceptional graphics, great replay value, excellent controls, good Multi-player.
Cons: Similar to 2001 for ps2, saving takes a lot of space.
The Bottom Line: This is quite possibly the best sports game ever made. Great graphics, features, controls, gameplay, speed, and replay value. It is WELL worth the $50.
On November 18th, early in the morning, i waited in line at the local Target to pick up my gamecube. With my gamecube, i was able to pick up a memory card, and Madden 2002. When i got home and set it all up, i literally sat on my couch, glaring at the Tv from early morning until after midnight playing Madden 2002, that itself says a lot.
I am a huge Nfl fan, a huge madden fan, and a huge nintendo fan, so this was clearly the game for me. Even before i turned it on for the first time, i had very high expectations, and luckily, my expectations were met and some. I was very impressed with the various game modes the game had to offer. Franchise, Exhibition, season, and 2 minute drill just to name a few. But of all these modes, i especially enjoyed the franchise mode. I sat for hours and went through season after season as the head coach and general manager of my team. At the end of each season i would resign players, use my draft picks wisely, and attempt to barter with other teams for players i was interested in. This mode all by itself makes this a deep game with great replay value.
One thing that kept me playing for hours was the great gameplay and awesome controls. I loved the extensive playbooks and individuals juke moves, spin moves, stiff arms and such that could perform with a touch of a button. The control were very easy to learn, and after practicing for about 2 quarters, i had the hang of it. Once you get used to the controlls, the game takes the word fun to another level. Defense and special teams, unlike in other games, also kept my interest just as well as offense, which was a pleasant surprise. Between the extensive gameplay features and the controls i flat out felt that i was part of the game.
Not only were the controls great, and the gameplay excellent, but the graphics and sound were mind boggling. The players look so smooth and realistic you can hardly believe your not watching it on tv. The backrounds, fields, and stadiums are correct down to the last detail, and the weather effects are very detailed as well. This all came as no surprise, but what did was the sound. I played the sound both on surround sound and regular sterio and both were very high quality. I didn't know nintendo could produce sound like this in one of their games, but they did. It must be the minidisc the game is on. You could hear players grunt while getting hit, the pounding of the opposing lines fighting for position, and even ball hitting a reciever in the chest. Also the player details are incredable. They have many different faces that vary from player to player, and the break tackles and hard hits are smooth flowing and realistic.
Lastly the features kept you on your feet. The new coaches challenge is what i always dreamed of in a football game. The refs purposely screw up so that you can challenge calls. It was originally so much fun, i challenged plays there were obviously correct already. Along with that the madden challenge gives you points for completing tasks such as rushing for 100 yards in a game. Once you aquire 40 points you can buy a pack of cards that has players, cheerleaders, stadiums, cheats, ect. These can be used as powerups during games. Finally, as usual, the replay feature in this game is very intriguing. You can replay any play from every angle possible, zoomed all the way in or all the way out. Its a lot of fun to play around with.
In case you were wondering, i do not work for nintendo or Ea, i just flat out loved this game, and wanted to tell all of you about it. It's the best game i've played since zelda: a link to the past.
