The Bottom Line: If you don't own NCAA football 2002, buy Madden 2001, its less than $20 bucks and is the same game essentially.Or if you’re like me hold out for NFL2K2.

Ok, I have read countless reviews about how great Madden 2002 is for the PS2. Let me preface my review buy first stating my gaming history. I have played the Madden series every year since 1992, and I currently own 2001 for the PS2 and NCAA 2002 for the PS2 which I will use as comparisons in my review.
Don't get me wrong, Madden with all of its features and playability is by no means a bad game. I just feel its overrated and overstated.... and here's why:
GRAPHICS
In my opinion the graphics are identical to NCAA 2002. The animations are the same, the players look and move the same. It seams to be that they just increased the sharpness and brightness in Madden which I feel hurts the graphics. I prefer NCAA.
But none the less, the graphics are very good. Let me not take away from that. It’s just not a huge step ahead of last years effort or at all from the college game.
Playbook / Options
The 1st thing I noticed after playing the game is that many of the plays are IDENTICAL to the ones in NCAA, I know college & pro have similar plays but identical? Some variety please?
The franchise again is the biggest feature of the game, which as always is a treat. I personally bought it for the fact that I could import my NCAA draft class. But I could not get through a season, a season that played just like the college game.... no thanks. What’s the point in going to the pros if it’s the same as college?
Sound
This is the only category where Madden sucks...and always has. Madden and Sumerall are as about as entertaining as watching grass grow. And compared to NCAA commentators it’s pitiful. Even the NCAA stadium announcer (when your game is not televised) is better!
Why is NCCA better
Hmm where to start?
1) The option plays... tons of fun!
2) Graphically looks better IMHO!
3) Over 100 DIFFERENT teams (not the same 30 teams from different years like Madden)... all with custom play books!
4) Real announcers, that don't make u sleep.
5) You can beat Temple 52-0....priceless ( u can't beat a NFL team that bad! in madden) ... ok that one was lame, but u get the point, NCAA is better!
Summary
I don't mean to kill Madden 2002, it’s really a good game! But NCAA 2002 in my opinion is a much more fulfilling football experience. There really is no need own both... I sold my Madden 2002 on ebay for $42.00, not bad almost the price of a five day rental :)
