horsehead9's Full Review: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2002 for PlayStation 2
Tiger Woods 2002 is not only much better than 2001 was in every way, but it's the best golf game I have ever played, and that includes the many golf computer games too.
Game Features:
Play against the pros and some made up ones created by EA. There are eighteen golfers to choose from, including Tiger Woods, Justin Leonard, Lee Janzen, Notah Begay, Brad Faxon, Jesper Parnevik, Vijay Singh, and the fantasy players. Still though, i thought it could've used more golfers.
Six courses which include Pebble Beach, Royal Birkdale Princeville Resort, and three other fantasy golf courses which were made up by EA. Unfortunately after a while just six courses is not enough.
An entirely new graphics engine which provides extremely smooth animation and now provides weather effects.
Speed Golfing: A two player split screen mode in which the object is to beat your opponent to the hole.
Different modes of play which include: Match Play, Skins, Stroke, tutorial , practice, and the aforementioned speed golf two player action.
When you win games you gain more abilities for your player
Gameplay:
The controls have been slightly changed since Tiger Woods 2001 and there are many new, and fun additions. You no longer have to put up with that three click idiocy when taking a swing. Now, when you take a swing you will be pulling back on the analog stick, and quickly pushing up to make your swing. Now however, when taking a backswing, you now have the ability of adding power by hitting the L-1 . It's hard to do, but if done succesfully it can give you a hefty advantage when taking long par shots. When the ball is in the air you can also hit the L2 button in order to give the ball some back spin which will allow it to keep bouncing on the green more or less depending on how much you hit the L2 button. One dissapointing thing about the game is that you can no longer redirect the ball when it is in the air, but the makers must have decided that it was making the game too easy. When swinging timing is extremely crucial, if you press forward too late after Tiger Woods is taking his backswing, you will lose substantial power; timing now plays a key factor.
Putting is also much better than it was last year. You will now aim at the hole with a floating target on the top. One thing i was very happy about is that the lie of the ball no longer is represented by the transparent graph but it has been replaced by a line that stretches from the hole to the end of your club. It's a very easy game to catch on and learn but fanatics need not worry because the game is still extremely difficult to completely master, especially when playing the super hard fictional courses.
Graphics:
Of all the golf games out there Tiger Woods 2002 is by far the best looking golf game you can find. The 2002 version is a huge improvement from the 2001 version in virtually every aspect. The trees, grass, sand, water etc are all visually stunning; they almost look real. The frame rate is perfect, in fact it's one of the smoothest games around. I have personally enjoyed the new weather features which includes thunder, rain, and overcast. The new fictional courses, look just as good if not better the real courses and they are just as fun.
Sound:
The game sounds like what golf sounds like when you are out on a course. You'll hear the wind shaking the leaves in the trees, birds chirping, and at times you will hear the roar of the thunder. The commentary guys are Bill Macatee
and David Feherty who do a mediocre job.
This is a game for golf fans and non-golf fans alike. Both can easily get drawn into this game; i feel that watching golf is boring, but this game is nothing like watching golf.
