| sweetcece's Full Review: Electronic Big Mouth Billy Bass |
Probably everyone in the United States has heard of Big Mouth Billy Bass: The Singing Sensation, but in case you haven't I'll give you an overview.
Billy Bass is an electronically activated artificial bass which is mounted on a "board" giving the illusion of a mounted fish on the wall. When an unsuspecting person goes past the mounted fish, Billy Bass breaks into song with special effects such as its mouth moving and tail wagging.
For years now my youngest son who is autistic has held a fascination about any toy that makes sound or moves. So when these fish and other related motion activated "toys" started to appear in the store, it was natural for him to gravitate to them so that he could play with them. It wasn't unusualy for him to go walk down the line and make all of the "Boogie Bass" as he calls them sing at the same time.
So, when Kroger had their Big Mouth Billy Bass fish at an incredible closeout sale of $5, I had to send "Santa Claus" over there to pick one up for my son as a Christmas gift under the tree. Well, rest assured, this was a great success.
After placing fresh batteries (4 C sized) within the Billy Bass, he works just great! He sings two different songs: Take Me To The River by Al Green and Don't Worry, Be Happy by Bobby McFerrin. Most folks believe these "toys" are aggravating, and that may be true, but I guess I'm used to having "aggravating" noisy toys here in my home most of the time so the addition of Billy Bass hasn't created much ruckus here.
One of the things that I like about Billy Bass is that it has an easel assembly so that it can stand on a dresser or shelf. We have restrictions on placing items here on the wall in our apartment complex so having the fish stand on the headboard of my son's bed is a blessing. The fish can look over him as he sleeps and he can have it sing any time he wants.
Another feature that I like about Billy Bass is that I can turn the sensor feature off where it isn't motion activated. In our home we have constant movement, especially with my cats so at least with the sensor off, we can have a bit of quiet... until my son decides to press the button to make the fish SING again! (grin)
A great security feature of Billy Bass is that the battery compartment is locked with a screw to avoid children from tampering with the batteries or cover. I've seen so many battery operated toys have the battery cover torn off by children, rendering the toy useless, so having the feature insures that it will last a long time.
Even though the Billy Bass takes 4 C sized batteries, you are able to purchase a 120 volt AC adapter for the toy to help defray expenses. In my situation, the batteries cost over $3 and that's more than 1/2 of what I spent on the fish in the first place.
Like most of my son's toys, he likes to name the "animals". So, when he decides to name his Billy Bass, I can have the name of his fish engraved on the extra nameplate which is included in the box!
Believe it or not, my son has his Big Mouth Billy Bass laying beside him in bed as he is sleeping. It makes a very funny picture as I walked in there earlier to check on him and I had to laugh. However, I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I truly have received my money's worth from this cute toy fish. It's a very cherished possession of my youngest son and I have to give it a highly recommended rating.
