november52002's Full Review: Fisher-Price Sesame Street Elmo Live
Where and why did you buy the Fisher Price Sesame Street Elmo Live doll?
We bought the Fisher Price Sesame Street Elmo Live doll from Walmart when it was on sale a few months ago for $39.88. It was a random purchase. I had seen it months before in another store for twice the price and they were selling for a lot on Ebay too. My son is 2 and is a fan of Elmo. This was the main reason aside form the price that attracted me to get him this toy. The price was good over all. This is Elmo, Elmo is always more money then most other characters are in price.
So what does he do, can you describe him and how does he work?
Elmo is red and furry. I would have to say that he is fuzzier and more like Elmo from the television show then any of the other Elmo dolls our son has right now. His looks are really more realistic. His inner body is hard and his feet are hard and sturdy. He is mostly bottom weighted. This Elmo comes with a blue stool that he can sit on. This is made of plastic and is fairly strong.
What makes this Elmo stand out more then others that have come before him is the fact that the Fisher Price Sesame Street Elmo Live doll opens his mouth and closes it at just the right time in line with when he speaks. This Elmo can sing songs, tell you jokes, speak many phrases and tell stories as well. His arms move and wave with his talking and singing. Elmo can even sit and cross his leg over the other. He also does other silly little things like when my son holds Elmo's nose he will do "Ah, Ah ah chooooo" or almost sneeze then stop himself and end up sneezing a few seconds later. He will some times say "hey have you seen my nose, it was here a minute ago?"
The Fisher Price Sesame Street Elmo Live doll some times can fall down or be knocked over by mistake. Elmo realizes this even if he is in the middle of talking, dancing or singing. He will say "Elmo fell down, can you help Elmo up please?" And when you do he will thank you for it. So I would say this is the most interactive Elmo on the market. There is a new Elmo Live coming out that may beat this one, but so far this is the best I have seen.
Elmo takes six double A batteries. He comes with them. His batteries are replaced through his feet and you need a phillips head screw driver to remove the screws on the battery cases. Battery life depends on how much you use Elmo. Our batteries that came with it dies with in one week. But this was on the front of the shelf in the store and had the try me option on it so it may have been used a bit before we got it. We replaced them with Energizer batteries and have had a few months of use so far with out having to replace the batteries again. It does have a shut off mode. If he is not played with for a few minutes Elmo will shut himself down. So it is preserved better that way.
You can activate the Fisher Price Sesame Street Elmo Live doll in a few ways after he has been shut down. You can activate him by his foot, stomach, back area and even his nose. Elmo stands at about 13 inches in height. Smaller obviously, when he is sitting. If his stool is not behind him he will still squat like he is sitting and his legs will still cross as well. He speaks and sings loud enough to understand him clearly and his voice does not crack and skip.
The age recommendation on the Fisher Price Sesame Street Elmo Live doll is for children who are 18 months of age and over.
Does it have any problems?
It does have it's quirks. When Elmo goes to sit on his stool, if the stool is not positioned right behind him it may tip one way or the other and Elmo will fall over. If the surface he is on is not flat he could fall over too. Some times he clicks. Like when he moves his mouth you hear a clicking or grinding noise for a few seconds and then it goes away. This does not happen every time but some times it does. These are not major issues and are easily dealt with.
Does your son still like and play with this toy?
Our two year old still plays with his Elmo Live. It is one of his favorites. He likes to hold his nose and hear the jokes he tells the best. The sound effects like boings and dings are what seems to impress him the most. He laughs every single time Elmo sneezes and imitates him while he is doing it. I would say he plays with his Elmo at least once or twice per day. The only time he skipped playing with it, was when he was not feeling well.
Would you recommend it?
Sure I would. The few quirks that Elmo has are nothing major. It still entertains my son and brings him hours of fun. This is the most life like of all the Elmo dolls my son has which includes Chicken Dance Elmo, Hokey Pokey Elmo, Tickle Me Elmo, Up Up Elmo, Ba Ba Elmo and more. None of those impress our son as much as the Fisher Price Sesame Street Elmo Live doll does. I have to say that we will be buying the newer version when it becomes available, and comparing the two after some use of that one. I will then write a review on that one and update this one accordingly as well. Keep your eyes open for that in the next few months. In the mean time. Thank you for taking the time to read my review.
