| KCFemme's Full Review: Elms Resort And Spa |
After months of way too many work hours and too little time with my husband, we decided to take one night for the two of us to truly be able to relax and get back to just one another.
The Elms is located about an hour away from us, far enough to get away and not have the kids calling us home, and close enough that we wouldn't have to spend the entire weekend traveling. The only problem with the location is that it can be difficult to find through all the smaller highways of the area.
We were lucky enough to find a special for the one night we wanted to get away on their web site. $139 for a deluxe room, with a free dinner for two in the dining room and a free breakfast for two in the dining room.
When we first arrived and checked into our room we were horrified to find out we were right next to the ice maker and it seemed to be on the fritz, it sounded like there was running water going through it. When we asked the ladies at the front desk if we could move, they had no problem accomodating us and thanked us for letting them know before it became a problem.
Both of the rooms were somewhat small, but there was certainly more than enough room to walk around and store your items. This didn't really bother us much since we didn't come to the spa to sit in our room the entire time.
Although we do usually end up taking some of the little soaps, lotions, shampoos and such, we did think that the idea of soap dispensers both near the sink and in the tub/shower was a great idea for a historical site that is trying to keep making improvements on their facilities while still keeping their prices somewhat reasonable.
I really liked that with the coffee pot, they provided both caffinated and decaffinated coffees and teas and actually provided you with enough cream and sugars to last more than one cup.
After looking for the brochures in the room and not finding them, we did find that there was a channel on the tv that was devoted to information about the hotel, and included menus for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. So although it wasn't in paper form, the information was still available in the room.
The spa is wonderful. We started out with a couples massage. 50 minutes for $150 for the two of us. It was absolutely wonderful. These therapists were excellent. It was really funny that my therapist was naming all the parts of my body that had been in pain over the past few weeks and my husband confirming them all. The light mood music, candles, and a deep tissue massage really helped me out, that's for sure.
When I was getting a pedicure, my husband got a manicure and actually enjoyed it. :-) The spa uses lotions and scrubs that are their own blends. I must say it was a different sensation having my legs massaged with salt and rosepetals. But my legs are silky smooth and feel great!
The dining room is the only place we ate since we did have the certificates. We were really surprised to find out that the only restriction was that alcohol and gratuities were not covered. We usually just stick with the entree, but last night we enjoyed a cajun cocktail shrimp (huge prawn, very spicy), lots of rolls, cokes and tea, I had the prime rib (actually rather lean & extremely large), and he had the KC Strip (also huge and seared with spices), with two large pieces of triple chocolate cake to take with us to the room.
Let's just say that after the massage and the dinner we were feeling mighty good.
Although the regular prices of the menu for dinner average around $20 a meal, the breakfasts average about $6. And the meals they serve are very large. You definitely won't leave hungry.
Some of the things we didn't take advantage of (this time) are a nice little bar, indoor and outdoor swimming pools and hot tubs, outdoor games (volleyball, horse shoes, bike riding, and a challenge course), and many different spa enjoyments like facials, mud baths, etc.
One thing I did like was that the outdoor pools were already open the first weekend in May. This is because the pools are heated. Although it was about 70 degrees outside, the pool itself was around 80.
As for the service there, I didn't find anyone that wasn't cheerful and helpful. They were all quite pleasant.
So my overall recommendation for anyone who would like to visit the Elms, first of all check out their website. There are so many different deals being put up that you are bound to get something that is just right for you. But do be prepared to spend around $500 if you are planning on using the spa. Our breakdown of the night without taxes or tips: Room - $139; Dinner - $79 but free; - Breakfast - $13 but free; Couples Massage - $155; Pedicure - $55; Manicure - $25; and a delightful smelling candle - $15.
As you see, it all adds up. But I came home feeling better than I have in months. For me it was definitely worth every penny spent! And even my husband admitted to enjoying himself.
