| LisaDo's Full Review: Embryonics Sing with Me Cube |
Our son has been fascinated with music ever since he was a baby. Where most kids scream if they can't watch cartoons, Zacky was that way toward CMT. He loved to watch the music videos. Any toys that played music, especially if it also had lights, was quickly a favorite of his.
My parents were in town in May and they saw the Embryonics Sing With Me Magic Cube at a store in Williamsburg and they knew it had all of Zacky's qualifications for being a good toy. Music and lights. They picked it up and brought it back to the condo where we were all staying while they were on vacation. They were quickly disgusted, though, at after paying roughly $35 for a toy, it didn't even come with the AA battery that it required. Since a lot of toys now come with their first batteries, they had assumed this one did as well. It didn't.
After my husband and I made a battery run while we were out, we used a Phillips screwdriver to replace the battery. We had a devil of a time trying to find the compartment since they hid it very well. There is one edge of the cube that is wider than the others. It says Embryonics Sing With Me Magic Cube on it, has a small, black screw, which houses the battery, and a small off/on switch.
What is the Embryonics Sing With Me Magic Cube? It is a, roughly, 5 1/4" square, plastic cube. The faces of the cube are white with cut outs of music notes. The center of each face is the picture of an instrument on a different colored background. The cube is edged in purple and the corners are made of a soft rubber type material, and they're rounded off. The corners are different colors as well. There is yellow, red, blue, and green. The instruments are:
~A guitar on a blue face panel.
~A set of drums on a red face panel.
~A flute on a purple face panel.
~A tuba on a green face panel.
~A piano on an orange face panel.
~An orchestra on a blue face panel.
When one of the faces are pressed, the Embryonics Sing With Me Magic Cube plays a song in the instrument pictured. The face will also flash a light in beat of the instrument that is playing.
When the orchestra face panel is pressed, all of the instruments start to play and flash. If you press one of the instruments while this is going on, it will turn off the flashing light and music from that one instrument. Press it again and it joins back in with the song. If you press the orchestra face panel while the music is playing, it will change songs. Even if you press all of the instruments to turn them individually off, the orchestra button will still be light up until the song is over, even though you can't hear it.
What songs does the Embryonics Sing With Me Magic Cube play? It plays:
~Old MacDonald
~Eensy, Weensy Spider
~If You're Happy and You Know It
~B-I-N-G-O
~Hokey-Pokey
~POP! Goes The Weasel
~This Old Man
~Row, Row, Row Your Boat
Most of these are songs that we all grew up with anyway, but if you don't know the words, the Embryonics Sing With Me Magic Cube comes with a small song book. The cube does not feature any singing at all, it just plays music, so you and your child will have to furnish the words to the songs it plays.
The Embryonics Sing With Me Magic Cube has been a great toy for our son. He loves to listen to the music as the lights flash in time of the beat. It doesn't hold his interest very long in one sitting, but he continues to go back to it over and over again to listen to the soft, smooth music.
We have had our Embryonics Sing With Me Magic Cube since May and have yet to replace the battery. While it does have an On/Off switch, there is no volume control, but it really isn't that loud. My only one complaint is that it was so expensive. My parents paid $35 for the Embryonics Sing With Me Magic Cube and they couldn't even put a battery in it. They thought it was so expensive because of buying it in Williamsburg, but by looking around online, that is about the "going" price.
While the Embryonics Sing With Me Magic Cube says that is it for "All ages", I would say that 12-36 months would be most appropriate. Some older children, like our son, still enjoys the Embryonics Sing With Me Magic Cube, but I don't think I would buy it for an older child. I don't think you would get your money's worth of play out of it. That is just my opinion, though.
