Pros:Chemical-free mouse control possible
Cons:Mouse control impossible with this product
The Bottom Line: Mouse control is best done through cleaning, uninviting mouse families, removing bedding and food, and using traps but it is not done using this product.
Do you believe in the Tooth Fairy, Santa, and The Great Pumpkin? Great, then I have a bridge and an Ultrasonic Electromagnetic Pest Repeller for you to buy. With slight changes in weather and the absence of a watchful hunter, our cat, the local mice have decided to seek new homes for the upcoming winter. We must be in for a tough winter if theyre already investigating shelters. Last years experience with mice at the museum was enough to last me several yearsits either time to adopt another cat or find an aggressive way to keep the mice out. Asking them to leave nicely or yelling go somewhere else just doesnt seem to work.

Last winter we were inundated with mice at the museum, I mean they were high flying and jumping everywhere. Someone left popcorn out and a huge stash of birdseed and apparently the mice considered that an invitation. Those brazen mice were running around my office, under my feet and strolling up and down the hallway. We called our exterminator and he was flabbergasted by the numbers that he was finding. His company scheduled their winter staff meeting on a cruise ship after they finished working on our mice. (Well, they could have.)
One of my Board members suggested using the Emerson Ultrasonic Electromagnetic Pest Repeller. He had a problem at his mothers house and used these plug-in devices. Concerned about how this would affect our dragons, hissing roaches and other small critters we didnt install any downstairs in the public area.
This pest repellers ultrasonic sound waves make life uncomfortable for rodents and theoretically rodents will avoid this high-pitched sound that creates auditory distress. The function of the electromagnetic repeller falls into the category of pure tooth fairy and fantasy according to everything I read and the owners manual states only that the electromagnetic waves pass through walls and floors to disturb the pests where they live and effectively eliminates them with continuous use.
Ultrasound waves dont travel through walls or doors or even floors. Not going through floors is good since the critter collection was under my office and my office had a rodent party going on every afternoon from 1 p.m. until 7 a.m. the next day. We needed more than one unit and fortunately he had more than one. (By the way, the exterminator never felt threatened, not once, but he did chuckle a few times.) We installed six units into wall outlets, one per room and one for the hallway my board member removed them from his mothers house. She no longer lived there and removing them wasnt a problem. Our arsenal was ready.
The EA200 At Ease Ultrasonic Electromagnetic Pest Repeller looks like a large handheld radio. It has an electromagnetic indicator, ultrasonic transducer (speaker), AC outlet on the side and an ultrasonic indicator. Its not all that small (6 x 7 x 2). It requires 120 volts. Instructions state this needs to be used continuously but also states:
Make sure all food is put away and stored correctly (we certainly had already done that)
Find and repair any openings in the building (it was a very old building but we did our best)
Avoid placing behind large pieces of furniture.
This is not harmful to plants or pets such as dogs, cats, birds and fish.
Could be a problem for people with pace makers. We put up a sign warning visitors of this product.
We must have confused the rodents. The party moved elsewhere for two days immediately after setting these up, but everything quickly returned to normal. We left this installed in the plugs for two months, but soon realized that the mice were not the least bit concerned about this disruption in the force. Actually, the owners manual states, In some cases, over time, certain rodents may become used to Ultrasonic sound and return to their nesting or feeding habitats, even in the presence on an Ultrasonic product. May, ha!, Will return. I think they enjoyed the buzz. Save your money for sending the exterminator company on vacation.
Our building was incredibly clean for months because of the mouse problem. I haunted people who had parties and explained they absolutely had to clean up and carry out their trash. Our staff followed up after the parties to make certain all crumbs were removed and then they cleaned with a bleach solution. We swept as though we were selling a house. The exterminator was impressed by how clean the building was and yet, it still had mice. Eventually the mice disappeared, the exterminator reported that his poisons were being eaten less often and he finally went weeks without replacing the baits. But that was loooonnnnnggggg after the Ultrasonic pest repellers were installed. Actually the weather had warmed up and the party moved outdoors or went on the road.
This Fall in my Cat-less Big Old House
I hate using chemicals and hate killing mice but realize the necessity of both when controlling rodents, especially in a public location with lots of children or when attempting to sell a house. My cat is keeping Mr. Pestyside company in his Houston apartment. The dogs would probably adopt the mice rather than injure them. It doesnt seem appropriate for me to get a second cat simply to hunt mice so Ive already begun setting out traps. Yelling at them still doesnt work, but it might be more successful than the Emerson EA200 At Ease Ultrasonic Electromagnetic Pest Repeller.
