I like different types of movies and have enjoyed some really silly ones before. There are times when I’m just in the mood for something silly to laugh at. In the last several months, most of the movies I’ve seen in the theaters have been very serious or even a bit sad at times. I recently decided it was time for something silly again and went to see Employee of the Month.
Vince and Zack both worked at the same Super Club warehouse store. Vince was the head cashier and had been the employee of the month for their store for seventeen months in a row. If he won one more, he would win a car. Vince was obsessed with winning that car and most of the other employees didn’t like him. Zack had been working there several years and was still a box boy. Vince and Zack were both interested in Amy, a new cashier in their store. They heard that she had a thing for men who were employees of the month which motivated Zack to start doing better on the job to try to win the title.
I wasn’t expecting a lot when I went to see Employee of the Month, so my expectations were fairly low. Maybe that’s why I ended up enjoying it overall. It was just a fun, light-hearted, somewhat silly movie. It was good for a distraction for a little while. It wasn’t a serious movie, so anyone in the mood for a serious movie should pick something else. The plot was simple and straight forward without any suspense or surprises. Some viewers might feel like the movie is too predictable. I was still able to enjoy it and think others can as well as long as their expectations aren’t too high.
Employee of the Month made me laugh several times. Much of the humor was rather silly or even downright stupid at times, but it still made me laugh. Vince and Zack kept trying to out do each other in their quest to become employee of the month with humorous results much of the time. Vince said and did several things that made me laugh. One of Zack’s friends and co-workers, Lon, had extremely bad eyesight. He ended up doing some things that were funny because of that. There were also some laughs provided by the fact that Lon worked in the vision center.
Amy transferred to the Super Club where Vince and Zack worked fairly early in the movie. That set up a love triangle since both men were interested in Amy. She did seem to be dazzled by Vince when she first met him and he was bragging about his accomplishments at the store. After Zack started putting more effort into his work and he received some recognition, Amy seemed to develop some interest in him. Amy did spend a bit of time with both men throughout the movie. There were a few sexual discussions without there really being any sexual situations. There wasn’t any nudity or any sex scenes in the movie. Amy wore some low cut tops at times. That was the closest the movie got to nudity. There was some swearing but it wasn’t excessive. It was rather mild for a movie that was rated PG-13.
Vince and Zack were the main characters in Employee of the Month. The two had worked together for a long time and really didn’t get along. Zack was a slacker that didn’t take his job seriously. He wanted to avoid responsibility because of something that had happened in his past. He was well liked around the store and was a nice guy for the most part. Dane Cook was fine in the part. Vince was arrogant and loved to brag about his accomplishments in the store. He looked down on most of the other people working there. Jorge was his only friend at work. Dax Shepard was very believable in the part. I’ve also enjoyed him in Without a Paddle and Zathura. Andy Dick was around in some scenes as Zack’s friend Lon. He didn't have much to do.
Amy had been working as a cashier at another Super Club before transferring to a new store. She was very attractive, which gained her the attention of Vince and Zack. She did seem to like both men at different times. Amy was important to the plot even though her part wasn’t that big. Jessica Simpson was fine in the part. She did end up having a few scenes that had her walking in slow motion while the camera zoomed in on her like happened in The Dukes of Hazzard. She was more covered in this movie for the most part and had a little more to do. None of the other characters were that developed or important.
Main Cast
Dane Cook - Zack
Andy Dick - Lon
Dax Shepard - Vince
Jessica Simpson - Amy
Greg Coolidge - Director
Employee of the Month was a decent, light-hearted comedy. Some of the humor was silly, but it was still entertaining. I think it could be a good pick for people in the mood for a funny movie as long as their expectations weren’t too high.
