georgekessel's Full Review: EnGenius DuraFon 1X 1-Line Cordless Phone
The Durafon really does have the best range by far out of any cordless phone I have ever used. I live in a 5 story concrete house and the phone works everywhere. My other 5.8ghz phones only make it 2 stories tops.
That's the good part, the bad part is the design and the headset plug/issue. The belt clip is clearly an afterthought and is not made to simply slip onto your hip like other phones. It sort of dangles and is very difficult to attach and remove. The headset jack is on the bottom of the phone which means you have to unplug your headset to place the phone on the charger. Also you can't stand up the phone with a headset plugged in. To make matters worse when you use the headset there is terrible "white noise" that makes it quite unpleasant to use. Last but not least they forgot to have the phone ring through the phone when the headset is plugged in. EVERY OTHER CORDLESS PHONE IN THE WORLD RINGS THROUGH THE NORMAL SPEAKER WHEN A HEADSET IS PLUGGED IN. The "geniuses" at Engenius forgot to do that one simple feature. That means you must unplug your headset after every use or you won't know that the phone is ringing (duh...)
The phone is reasonably comfortable to hold. It's lighter then other handsets that I use including a VTech 5.8 and a Panasonic 5.8. It has a 2-way intercom system but you have to purchase an extra handset ($350) to use that feature. Other features include the ability to program the phone for use via a PBX system (of not use to the average consumer including me). It has caller ID, and a built in phone book. It lacks a built in speakerphone that most models have nowadays and the display isn't quite up to par with modern phones. You can select different ringers but they are all pretty much the same (6 variations on 'ring ring'). Battery life is comparable to other models.
