by the Epinions community
Pros:Specialized, calorie-dense infant formula designed to provide balanced nutrition for premature infants.
Cons:Is not breastmilk; more expensive in price than many starter formulas.
The Bottom Line: Parents of premature infants with specialized feeding needs may want to consider discussing the benefits of using calorie-rich Enfacare with their doctor if breastfeeding is not an option.
While most pregnancies result in a full term infant born anywhere from 38 to 42 weeks gestation, sometimes babies as born prematurely and must have intense and specialized care for basic survival and good health. When this happens, depending on the degree of prematurity, these tiny neonates are placed into a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (the PICU for short) where they receive 24 hour a day medical care. While new mothers are often encouraged to pump their own breastmilk to use as gavage feedings as many premature infants are unable to suckle at the breast or from a bottle, this superior form of infant nutrition is sometimes substituted with infant formula designed especially to meet the specific needs that premature infants require. In the hospital, one choice often prescribed by neonatologists is a nutritionally dense formula called Enfamil Premature Formula. Once these babies have gained weight and are ready to be discharge home with their families, however, sometimes doctors wish for these special needs infants to continue receiving a similar supplement such as Enfacare. Also more nutritionally dense than regular starter infant formulas, this feeding choice can successfully assist these small human beings as they physically grow and develop at their own special rate.

Produced by Mead Johnson, the makers of Enfamil, Enfacare is a nutritionally balanced calorie dense iron-fortified infant formula that is specially designed to meet the needs of premature babies once they are ready to leave the hospital and be discharged into the care of their parents. This milk based choice containing extra ingredients not provided by routine types recommended by many pediatricians contains more calories per ounce (22 calories per ounce verses 20 calories per ounce found in typical formulas) to help these smaller babies gain weight quickly. In addition to being more calorie dense than routinely available when standard feeding choices are made, this special needs formula not only contains extra protein, vitamins, and minerals as well but also a special fat source called "MCT oil" (medium chain triglyceride oil) that is easier to digest in a premature infant's tender tummy. So while many mothers of these tiny babies are encouraged to pump their breastmilk and then later introduce their new bundle of joy to the breast when he or she is able to latch on, an alternative supplement such as Enfacare is available to meet the nutritional needs these infants require should breastfeeding be unsuccessful or is not desired.
~~~Price & Availability~~~
While Enfacare may be a bit more difficult to locate in many popular grocery and discount stores, it is now currently available in the 14 ounce powdered variety at www.cvs.com for $12.19 each. Properly diluted as directed, each powdered canister will yield over 100 ounces of this special nutritional source. Only slightly more expensive in price than many other typical routine infant formulas, this special balanced supplement more easily meets the nutritional needs of premature infants while they sometimes struggle to gain weight in the beginning than many other choices because of the extra calories and other extra ingredients it contains. And frequently, once these small babies have a few months to grow larger while being fed this alternative choice, pediatricians often suggest that a regular milk based or soy formula be used as a replacement if they are developing normally without any major problems. So until premature infants "catch up" with their same age peers, parents can be reassured that feeding their little ones Enfacare as medically recommended is a wise nutritional choice.
~~~Directions for Use~~~
Enfacare milk based iron fortified formula is usually available in the 14 ounce powdered canisters only. Mix one leveled scoop of this dry formula for every 2 ounces of water as directed and SHAKE WELL. Careful and accurate measurements are critical to your baby's health, so pay special attention to packaging instructions. Store opened canisters covered at room temperature and use within 1 month after the seal is broken. To decrease waste, mix only an amount that you think your baby will consume at each feeding and discard any remaining formula left in the bottle as it is contaminated with bacteria once it comes in contact with your baby's mouth. Use a microwave cautiously, if at all, when warming any infant formula as "hot spots" can occur, resulting in serious burns. Check the expiration date printed on the bottom of each powdered can of Enfacare and use the older cans first before that date approaches.

Once premature babies are discharged home from the hospital, those that are not breastfed often grow and thrive on a special nutritionally dense infant formula called Enfacare. Milk based, iron-fortified, and containing the extra calories and other nutrients that these special needs preemies require, this supplemental choice will provide what their small bodies crave to grow and develop as normally as possible. So while the majority of newborns come into the world full term and will not ever need this special nutritional source, it is very comforting to know that this alternative choice to breastfeeding is available for the growing number of surviving special needs babies who did not receive the benefits of remaining in utero for the proper amount of time. Now thanks to neonatal medical advances as well as Enfacare and other similar feeding choices, premature infants that would have surely suffered the ill effects of their unfortunate fate an entire lifetime are now generally more healthy and enjoy a much greater quality of life than many ever thought possible.
