Pros: Good for reflux, more convenient than having to mix cereal in separately
Cons: Somewhat expensive, can cause constipation (but so can many thickened formulas)
The Bottom Line: A very good formula for reflux babies.

| awschon's Full Review: Enfamil A.R. |
My son has suffered moderately severe reflux since birth, and a thickened formula was recommended for him at seven weeks of age. At first, we added cereal into his regular formula (at the time, we were using Similac with Iron). But this can be pretty inconvenient, especially when you are out somewhere (having to measure it out and mix it up very well). Then we found Enfamil A.R. - no mixing anything extra into it - it already has added rice starch (hence, the A.R.). We were using the powder variety, but we really just prefer the ready to feed because you can just pour it and the consistency is perfect, so now we only use that, even though it is more expensive. It flows easily through most regular nipples (we use both Playtex nursers with the natural shape silicone nipple, and Avent), unlike formula with cereal added separately, which can (but does not always) clog up a nipple. You can avoid this problem by making sure that you expand the nipple hole, but be careful not to expand it too much or your little one could choke on a flow of liquid that is way too fast.
One of the particularly nice things about this formula is that it thickens even more once it is in the acidic environment of baby's stomach, which is great for babies with reflux.
The downside:
It can cause constipation, like many thickened formulas. The solution that our pediatrician suggested for us, and it HAS worked, is to also buy the regular Enfamil with Iron and add barley cereal to it to thicken, when the baby is having harder stools or is beginning to suffer constipation. We keep a couple of cans of the regular Enfamil with Iron around the house, along with the barley cereal (oatmeal is alright for this too, but the barley works much better), and when our son is having trouble going to the bathroom, we give him the Enfamil with barley and he goes within 12-24 hours.
