| augustwind's Full Review: Enfamil Lacto-Free |
When I switched my baby from breast milk to formula, I first settled her on Enfamil milk-based formula with fortified iron. She was fine for a few weeks, although I started to notice that she had more and more gas and her stool was kind of loose all the time.
I checked with our pediatrician, and mentioned my own problem of lactose intolerance with milk and milk product. Our pediatrician told us it is a fairly common problem with Asian origin people to have lactose intolerance. And since my baby only has minor problem with milk-based formula, he suggested that she might just be lactose-sensitive.
Still, I don't want her problem with milk-based formula continued. Even though her development seemed very fine and she didn't feel too much discomfort with the frequent gas and loose stool. This is when I found Enfamil lactose-free.
To look for substitute of milk-based formula, I actually looked into the possibility of soy-based formula (Enfamil Prosobee). But the strong
soy smell and taste of that formula made my baby refused to drink even one oz of it. Lactose-free formula, on the other hand, looks and tastes just like the regular milk-based formula. My baby has no problem to switch to it instantly. In fact, I don't think she could tell I switched formula.
After switching to Lactose-free formula, her problem with gas and loose stool dissappear in just a couple of days. And she never had any other digestive problem with it.
I think Enfamil Lactose-free formula (still with fortified iron) is perfect for baby that is lactose sensitive or intolerant. My baby grows exceptionally well with it until she is one year old and ready for whole cow milk. She is fine with whole cow milk, never had the gas problem she had with milk-based formula.
This sort of proved my pediatrician's point of her being only lactose sensitive, not intolerant. But since very young baby's stomach is very sensitive to anything, it's important to protect it away from ingredients that are easily causing allergic reactions. The Lactose-free formula provides just such protection for my baby.
But if your baby is milk-sensitive (sensitive to ingrediants in milk other than lactose), you have to use the soy-based Prosobee despite the strong soy smell and taste. Enfamil even has a line of formula for very sensitive baby (I can't remember the exactly name, sorry).
Enfamil Lactose-free is a little more expensive than regular milk-based formula. With the same price for one pound regular, you get 14oz for the Lactose-free. But I found the price is well worth it, since my baby grows so health with it. The healthy beautiful smile of my baby is worthless comparing anything else.
