Pros: Easy to digest for milk/lactose sensitive babies; economical
Cons: You may have to look a little to find the Prosobee without LIPIL.
When my baby was born, we had to supplement his feeding with formula for a couple different reasons. In the hospital, they asked me if I would prefer Similac or Enfamil. It didn't really matter to me, as long as my baby was fed, so I just told them to give him the one they had on hand. When they brought him back to me, they also brought along the mini bottles of Enfamil formula so I could feed him myself.
Fast forward a few days. My husband had bought more Enfamil formula to use at home. But then baby would cry and fuss whenever I would feed him -- almost like he was having cramps. That's when my mom suggested he may be milk sensitive, because I used to have the same problem as an infant. I called the pediatrician, who suggested I try giving him soy formula for a couple days, and see if that would help alleviate the problem. Since I didn't want to change brands at this point, I decided to try the Enfamil Prosobee LIPIL. Baby was much better with the Prosobee LIPIL, but after a couple days, he started acting like his tummy still hurt. I called the pediatrician again, who then told me to try the soy formula without LIPIL, because many babies develop an upset tummy with the LIPIL additives. I then went out and bought a can of regular Prosobee to try.
Why use Enfamil Prosobee?
Enfamil Prosobee is a soy based formula for babies who are sensitive to milk formula. It is 100% dairy free, and is easier to digest than regular milk based formula. Many pediatricians recommend soy formula when babies are crying or fussing during/after feedings, or for babies who have been ill and have diarrhea, because the soy is easier for them to digest until they are back to normal. Some women also choose soy formula voluntarily because they prefer not to give their child an animal based formula (for example, they are a vegan family).
What's Prosobee made of?
Prosobee is soy protein based. It contains no milk/dairy products. Also, instead of having lactose as its main carbohydrate, it has corn syrup solids. It contains no table sugar, unlike some other soy formulas, whose makers add table sugar to add sweetness. The fat content is based on vegetable oils, and is modeled after the fat content blend of breast milk. Prosobee is also iron fortified.
How do I use Prosobee?
Enfamil Prosobee comes in either liquid concentrate or powder form. If you are using the liquid concentrate, you mix equal parts of formula concentrate with pre-boiled, warm water and mix well. You can then store the formula in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours.
If you are using the powder form, you will find a powder scoop inside the can. For every 2 ounces of pre-boiled water, you add one level scoop of powder. So a 4 ounce bottle of fomula needs 4 ounces of water, and 2 scoops of formula. Shake/mix well to dissolve the powder. The mixed formula can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours as well.
Both formulas, once mixed, should be discarded 1 hour after you start feeding baby. Do not put the leftovers away for the next feeding because baby can get an upset stomach.
If you are using the powdered formula, the can should be used within one month of opening.
How do I buy Enfamil Prosobee?
It is available in a 13 ounce concentrate can, or in powder in either a 14 ounce or 28 ounce can. You can buy Prosobee at most mass merchandise stores, drugstores, or the grocery store. However, in my experience, some stores now carry only the Prosobee LIPIL, and not the regular Prosobee. I have always been able to find it at Target though.
How much does Prosobee cost?
The liquid concentrate costs most on a per-ounce basis compared to the powder form. The cheapest I have found the concentrate for was $3.29/can. One can makes 26 ounces of formula. The 28 ounce can of powder, on the other hand, makes 202 ounces of formula for about $21. I use the powder form, but I have tried the liquid as well. If it wasn't more expensive, I think I would be using the concentrate instead. I get tired of measuring powder with that little scoop sometimes!
Anything else to know?
Some people complain that Prosobee has a strange odor. It's not specific to just Prosobee -- all soy formulas smell funny. You may notice that baby's burps may have that soy smell as well, but it's a small price to pay for a happy tummy.
Also, some people say soy formula stains clothes more than regular formula. This isn't true in my case, though. I've never had a stain that didn't come out in a regular load of laundry washed with Dreft baby detergent. Even baby's burpcloths are all stain free.
You can receive coupons for Enfamil formulas by visiting the Enfamil website at www.enfamil.com and signing up for their Enfamil Family Beginnings program. They will send you all sorts of information about babies, as well as lot of coupons for formula. I get coupons from them about twice a month.
I'm glad my baby is using Enfamil Prosobee formula. Not only is he a happier baby, but we're happy because he's not in pain anymore. I used to cry seeing my baby in so much pain from his gas and cramping, but not anymore! He's gaining weight beautifully, and he's a very healthy baby. Prosobee was a lifesaver for us.
