Pros: Comes in low-fat and lactose free options; lots of flavors; not chalky
Cons: Expensive
The Bottom Line: Ensure is a tasty product for those needing extra vitamins, minerals, and sugar in their diet AND a great energizer for anyone who just needs a mid afternoon boost.

| caurieanne's Full Review: Ensure |
When my nutritionist recommended I try drinking Ensure every once in a while I was like "What?" I always thought Ensure was something they served in nursing homes or gave very sick people in hospitals. The notion of willingly buying and drinking Ensure did not excite me!
However, I wanted to become a healthier person and if Ensure was one way of doing it I will willing to try. I was seeing my nutritionist because I was in recovery for an eating disorder and even though I was eating much better then my full blown anorexic days, some days I still restricted and did not eat as much as I should. On these days, my nutriotinist recommended I drink Ensure to "ensure" that my body got the vitamins, minerals, and sugar it needed.
I tried Ensure and, much to my surprise, it wasn't as terrible as I thought it would be. I have tasted worse things in a college cafeteria. I am lactose intolerant and was surprised and glad to see Ensure offers a lactose-free variety - something not all nutritional supplement makers do. The lactose-free variety did not upset my stomach at all. Ensure also makes a "Light" variety for those who are watching their weight. The calorie content of the Ensure Light is a bit less then the regular, but the nutritional content is the same.
When I drank Ensure I tried both the vanilla and strawberry flavors in light and regular lactose- free. All of these Ensure drinks were acceptable - they weren't the best things I ever drank, but they certainly were not difficult to swallow. They were not chalky - like I anticipated - and were actually quite smooth and tasty. I liked the strawberry better and it was not difficult to pretend I was drinking a milk shake. Ensure definately tastes better chilled - something my future mother in law taught me. She drinks Ensure too :)
Although I do not need Ensure anymore because my diet is much more stabalized and well rounded, I still have a few cans in my refrigerator in case I have a day where I need a "pick me up." Ensure definately wakes me up and gives my body what it needs. I guess the fact that I still keep Ensure in my fridge is a pretty good indicator that Ensure is a good and worthwhile product. I bought it because my nutriotinist said I HAD to, but now that I don't HAVE to drink it medically, I still keep it around as a healthier and tastier alternative energy booster then coffee.
