My uncle Tony was like a father to me. He was diagnosed with diabetes in his early 80's and soon began to have trouble keeping weight on. In his final year he began to have trouble swallowing solid foods. Coupled with the hazards of diabetic reactions his nutritional needs became difficult to accommodate.

Upon the recommendation of his medical doctor we added Ensure Glucerna Shakes to his diet. He was particularly fond of the vanilla flavor. We tried other brands which seemed to contain the same ingredients and which were often cheaper, but, for some reason, he didn't go for them as much as the Ensure line of products.
I tried tasting the difference myself, and could not really tell the difference between the Ensure and the competitors. But uncle Tony clearly demonstrated his preference.
They taste like a cross between Slim Fast shakes and Jell-O puddings. Serving them very cold as opposed to a little cold or makes a big difference in the taste. Colder is much better and I would sometimes add ice to the servings to keep them chilled, but this would water down the mixtures a bit.
This isn't a nutritional supplement for those without diabetes. It isn't marketed that way and there's no reason for a non-diabetic to to buy Ensure products. They're high-calorie shakes, so there's really no application for them outside of senoir diabetic care. If you're going for high-calorie stuff a non-diabetic might as well go straight for the Ben & Jerry's..
Unlike Slim Fast shakes, the Ensure does not turn into cement on your glasses and in your sink, it cleans up easily and comes in convenient 6-packs of cans, making the work of the caregiver somewhat easier.
