jptoo's Full Review: Enter The Matrix for GameCube
Played the game last week and very much enjoyed it. There is a lot of work in this game. Every detail is meticulously rendured.
Please note that I had first bought the game for PC and had tons of problems with it. In the installation procedure, I had an error message telling me the inst.software could not find a particular file. After a few minutes I found a way to bypass the glitch, but during gameplay I had several bluescreens pop up. And just for the record, I have a very standard PC, with an ATI AthlonXP 1600+ processor, an AMD Radeon 8500 graphics card, 256MB RAM, WinXP, a SB sound card, and so on. So I decided to exchange it for a Game Cube version, on which gameplay was flawless.
Even on the GC version, the graphics (played on my 50 inch Toshiba rear projection tv) are simply amazing and look great. Movement is fluid, and bug-free. You can even slow down the action by pressing a "special effect key" so that your caractor moves in the same slow motion fashion as in the movie. This also permits your protagonist to perform special moves, like dodging bullits or jump flying. These moves are well explained throughout the game, so you don't really need to go through the manual before playing.
The sounds (on my 500W Dolby digital 5.1 system), are also very good in my opinion.
If you are a fan of the movies, you will be litteraly sucked up in the plot of Enter the Matrix. You actualy can find out more about the global story of the films, and about the caractors. I played the game before I saw the movie, and could understand better what was going on when I saw the movie (Matrix Reloaded). For instance, in the movie you don't see a lot of Neobe. Playing the game, you understand she is a key player in the Matrix trilogy. There are also a large number of cutscenes in the game, with the real Matrix actors. In my knowledge, this is a first in video game history.
The combats. In a few short words, they are simply the best moves I have seen in a game (not that I've played thousands, but hey...). In fact, you get to perform a lot of the moves you saw in the movie.
If you are thinking of buying it, I would advise you rent it first since it can be played in a few days. Also, there is little replay value. I bought it because I am a huge fan of the movies.
Although it is a little on the violent side, I let my 5 year old son play some parts of the game because it wasn't too gorry (but that was something my wife didn't totaly agree on...). He even managed to complete some levels of the game! It was great watching him winning against an agent (the plane sequence). It was pretty tough getting him to go to bed!
