Enter The Matrix is a game that follows the Matrix movies. The movies are about Neo, a person from within the Matrix, a giant computer program that machines use to keep humans busy while using their bodies for power, who gets rescued by Morpheus and Trinity. Neo then learns that he is "The One" and will save Zion, the human city, from the machines. Enter the Matrix begins right after the first movie and you play as Naobi and Ghost from the small and agile ship, The Logos.
Gameplay = 4/5
The Gameplay in Enter The Matrix was pretty fun. The fighting moves and the switching from guns to hand-to-hand combat was pretty cool. The action is intense and everything runs smoothly. The problem here though and the main reason that it didnt receive a perfect score is that all of this is fun .at first. After a little while the holds and kicks and punches become pretty much boring and repetitive. I cant really blame the creators though because the story line is pretty long, leaving quite a bit of time at the end of the game where the user already knows how to defeat enemies with ease.
Some of the boring times also comes from when your running from the agents. You have these levels where you have to run and run and run and the only way to really do it and finish the level is by learning where to turn, when to turn, and when to fight or keep running. So pretty much your first five or six times through a level your just learning where to go. Then you actually start trying to beat it and by then the level has already worn itself out on the player and your just wanting to see whats beyond.
One aspect of the gameplay that I thoroughly enjoyed though is the Hacker mode. This is a mode in which you have to try to figure out how to hack into some files that are on a computer and at the end of all this you get to see some cool screenshots, a few messages from Neo and Trinity, and unlock a few secrets. I found this mode pretty fun although I dont think everyone would find it all that great.
Controls = 3.5/5
The controls at first are pretty daunting. The game kind of hits you up with all these messages on how to do this and do that but after the initial shock of it all you can get the hang of it. Every once in a while though I found it pretty annoying that Id constantly mess up and find myself in first person view instead of running and when Agents are on your tail and its your fifth time through a level, you get quite tired of it all. The average user should be able to get the controls down quickly and work them pretty well.
Graphics = 4/5
Much of the game shines on its graphics. The graphics are pretty well done, not as well done as some games such as Final Fantasy 10 and such, but well done. The characters look like real people and when your fighting there are some effects like the back of your coat moving a little bit and such. The motion the characters have is pretty fluid though they run like they have a stick up their butt when you arent carrying your weapon. The explosions and gun fire are adequate, the fighting movements are fluid, and just for the most part, everything is well done.
The FMV sequences are really fun to watch (you can unlock these in Hacker Mode and view them as you please) and they tend to end up the whole reason you play, just to watch these scenes. The scenes also play right into the movies, which is pretty cool.
Sound/Voice Acting = 4/5
The voice acting was done by the actors from the movies themselves which helps with the continuity of the FMV sequences which contain clips filmed specifically for the game. The voice acting is pretty well done.
The sounds and music of the game are pretty well done and don't interfere with the continuity of play at all. The music at times gets a little upbeat which makes fighting through a group of fifteen enemies pretty fun.
Multiplayer = 2/5
This is where the game especially does not shine. The multiplayer in Enter the Matrix is like a little Mortal Kombat between the Matrix characters. The problem here though is, you cannot choose your characters, there are specified ones for each setting, and the fighting is really repetitive. After about five minutes of playing multiplayer, both players are crying out for something new! If you want a multiplayer game, this is definitely not the way to go.
Story = 4.5/5
This is the whole reason you should play this game. The story! The story is what makes the game and is what they intended to make the game. It fits right in to the movies, beginning just before Reloaded and ending somewhere in Revolutions. Playing the game you learn what happens behind the story of the movies. The FMV sequences were shot just for this game and feature Naobi and Ghost and others that were in the movies but just didnt seem to get much camera time. If youre a big Matrix fan, get this game and pay attention to the story, if youre not, then Id suggest not even getting the game. The story is what makes it and if you dont really care for the story, then why play?
Replayability = 1/5
This is pretty simple and along the same lines of the above mentioned category. The game is for the story and after youve experienced the story, there just isnt much to do. I beat the game with both characters and beat Hacking with both characters (which is exactly the same) and when I was done it was like well, what now. I havent touched the game since and its been three months. If you want a game to play over and over dont get this one. You will be sorely disappointed.
Overall = 3/5
Although the game features fluid graphics, easy controls, fulfilling gameplay and a great story line, it just lacks what it takes to be a great game in its replay ability and its multiplayer mode. A good game to throw in and beat just for the hell of it, not a good game to play over and over. My suggestion is to rent it from Blockbuster and view the story and forget about it (but dont forget to return it that is.)
