EnviroKidz Gluten Free Vanilla Animal Cookies - Yummy cookies... too easily broken

Written: Feb 01 '08 (Updated Feb 01 '08)
Pros:Tasty, Kid-Friendly brand, Decent price
Cons:Break too easily
The Bottom Line: Taste Great though a bit too crumbly!

My 7 year old son is on a gluten free and casein free diet so I am always on the lookout for kid-friendly snacks and cookies that fit into his diet. I'd previously been purchasing him the Orgran Outback Animals Cookies in chocolate flavor, but on my latest trip to Whole Foods they didn't have any on the shelf. Instead they had these EnviroKidz cookies in vanilla. Since we love the Gluten Free cereals from EnviroKidz I had high hopes for their animal cookies.

About EnviroKidz Gluten Free Vanilla Animal Cookies

EnviroKidz is a line of kid-friendly and environment friendly foods from the Nature's Path brand. These animal cookies come in just one flavor - vanilla and a 9 ounce box is prices around $3.50. I've only seen these at Whole Foods though the EnviroKidz brand is starting to infiltrate into the main stream stores and even Costco so I am hopeful that I'll see these soon on my local grocer's shelves. The cookies are:

Gluten Free
Trans-Fat Free
Vegetarian
Dairy Free
Organic

Unlike traditional animal cookies that are in animal shapes, these cookies are squares with raised outlines depicting animals. The animals are the EnviroKidz animals of course - Gorilla, Panda, Koala, Cheetah, and Orangutan. They look more like tea biscuits and taste similar to Girl Scout Trefoils or shortbread type cookies. Tastewise, they are quite good and as to be expected for a "plain" cookie. To me this is the kind of cookie that tastes good dunked in something (milk) but my son can't drink milk so he eats them plain with no complaints. The ingredients are all organic and they aren't as loaded up with artificial sweeteners like many kids cookies are. They do however contain cane sugar and corn syrup so they are not exactly the most healthful snack out there - they are after all cookies!

My only complaint about these EnviroKidz animal cookies has to do that they are very crumbly and break easily. In fact, it seems that either I was too rough on these cookies between putting them into my shopping cart and getting them home into my pantry or the damage occured prior to my possession of them - many of the cookies are already broken when I opened up the box. Kids don't like broken cookies - especially kids with Autism who have to have their food a certain way. I notice that when I send these into school that I always get a baggie home of broken cookies that my son refuses to eat. Since I pick out the broken ones when I make up his lunch these are obviously getting smushed and broken in his lunch box which makes them less than ideal to send in as a snack. I'll continue to purchase these EnviroKidz animal cookies but because they are so crumbly we'll stick to eating them at home.

Ingredients as listed by the manufacturer:
Organic evaporated cane juice, organic brown rice flour, organic corn flour, organic palm oil, organic cornstarch, organic low fat soy flour, organic corn syrup, organic vanilla and natural flavors, sea salt, sodium bicarbonate, (leavening agent), soy lecithin (added as an emulsifier), xanthan gum, organic cinnamon, tocopherols (Natural Vitamin E) added to enhance freshness.
