Pros: printed good photos when it worked, compact, user-friendly control menu
Cons: $9.95 service charge for troubleshooting help on "out of warranty" items 1 year old
The Bottom Line: Don't buy this printer or other Epson products--only warranted for 1 year then you have to shell out $9.95 for someone to read you their website for service.

I received an "Epson PictureMate personal photo lab" printer as a gift last year. It has been used about 10 times to print about 100 photos. I have not used it in about 4 months, so today I turned it on and got a "General Error" that directed me to the manual to fix it. It problem, #0002, was not in the manual, so I called customer service. Despite giving the operator the model number, she was unclear on which features this model had. After explaining what features it had (monochrome LCD screen on top), she asked for the serial number. With the serial number, she was able to tell me that is was no longer under warranty and there would be a $9.95 fee for further troubleshooting assistance. I said, "Wrong answer. This printer is less than 2 years old (date of mfg is 2004) and you are going to tell me what this error code is because the machine says to look in the manual and this code is not listed in the manual." She complied and looked it up but could not find the code. I asked if I could download a diagnostic program to figure it out or if I could download new firmware to update the printer. She said I could look online at the Epson website for assistance. She proceeded to read me the options available from the website; download drivers, troubleshooting assistance, frequently asked questions, etc. So, at best, EPSON service just reads you what they have on their website--and they try to charge you $9.95 for the service!!!
So, this printer did print decent pictures when it worked, but seeing that it cost a lot, the picture paper is expensive, and the cartridges are outrageously expensive, I highly suggest that you look elsewhere for your photo printing solutions.
