| Scott6969's Full Review: Epson Perfection 1200U Flatbed Scanner |
After reading dozens different reviews on various scanners I decided it's time to retire my old Mustek Twainscan II as it will not work under Windows 2000 for the Epson Perfection 1200U USB scanner. I've used the HP5200 scanner at work and thought it was fast but when I tried the Epson scanner it was faster! Full page color previews only took like 4 seconds which was enough to impress me. What really impressed me even more is the fast speed scans. I didn't have to fiddle with the settings too much to get perfect scans everytime. It doesn't hurt to try various settings because there will be days you'll might scan some old pictures and it just may help.
The bundled software that came with the scanner are nice and functional but I didn't use it long enough to provide an accurate review. However, I have tried Newsoft Presto! Pagemanger which makes it easy to quickly scan pictures and dropping them in various applications such as Netscape Mail in form of a "package" that automatically decompress and view the pictures without having the e-mail recipient to save the pictures and find the right software to view it. This program makes it easy to share your friends the stuff you scanned.
Only minor drawback is that Epson didn't include Windows 2000 drivers in the package. What you will have to do is get on the epson.com website and download it from there. The bundled software will work just fine but make sure you download and install the Windows 2000 drivers FIRST. When you are installing the bundled software CD make sure you skip the twain installation because you already installed the Windows 2000 drivers. It may just give you an error but to be safe I'd just skip that part. Another glitch for Windows 2000 users is that the scan button works fine but you can't choose which application to launch with it. Hopefully Epson will fix it.
Other than that it's been working great. I think it will work just fine for the next few years until something new comes along which usually happens.
