After the many hassles I had with my last scanner (it hated my Zip Drive, the software was buggy, etc.)and my current computer set-up, I knew USB would be the way to go for fewer troubleshooting variables.
The set-up and installation of the scanner took about 15 minutes total, including unpacking and rebooting time.
My only complaint with this process is the lack of paper documentation to explain the uses of the creative software. Since graphic and web design are part of my work, I already have quite a bit of image editing and layout software already on my machine, and rarely install all the free software that comes with new hardware. Yes, there are 2 sentence blurbs touting the free software's features, but if you haven't read all the way through the documentation booklet, you may not realize the importance of installing the PageManager software, for instance.
The quality of the scans (and even the previews) are great given this scanner's price. For most of my uses, I would not need to scan at resolutions higher than 1200 dpi (which is good given how huge image files are when you scan photos at that resolution.)
Overall, if you are looking for an easy-to-use and install scanner, with the ability to create low resolution images for the web and higher resolution images for print or other media, this is a great value for the quality.
