| psugrowler's Full Review: Epson Perfection 1200U Flatbed Scanner |
Buying the Epson Perfection 1200U was an easy selection for me. I had been eyeing this model for awhile. When the 1200U entered the market it was priced around $250. I saw it locally at Fry’s Electronics for $199 and took one of the last remaining models home with me.
Price was one of the main considerations in making this purchase but 1200 x 2400dpi (dots per inch) resolution was essential. If you have ever been in the market for a “good” scanner you quickly found out that most have only the capabilities of 600 x 1200 dpi.
The resolution was important for me, not only because I am a stickler for detail, but also because I was trying to find a way to get images of jewelry on the internet. I thought the scanner would be a quick fix solution. It was, but not offering the impressive results I would later get from my Sony 3.3 megapixel digital camera. I decided to keep the scanner anyway.
The best feature of any Epson scanner is the “one button” scanning feature. Load in your document and the scanner is fast at work copying or scanning your document to a printer, fax or e-mail. This makes scanning easy for anyone who is apprehensive about learning the intricacies of a new piece of hardware. The Epson Perfection 1200U flatbed color scanner tackles 8.5” x 11.7” area in a single pass and the results are impressive.
The 1200U comes complete with a USB interface and is compatible with Windows and Mac. 36 bit color depth gives you scans you never thought possible. 36 bit color depth is also capable of recognizing over 68 billion colors! I was impressed by the accurate replication of a Time magazine cover that I had printed out on photo paper. It actually looked even better then the magazine itself!
Epson will soon release a new scanner, the Epson Perfection 1240U. At the time I purchased mine I received all the scanner I needed at the right price. If the 1200U is still available somewhere at a decent price I suggest you pick one up. The resolution is incredible and the included Adobe Software has helped me enhance my images to the point where they look like they were photographed on the showroom floor.
