Pros: Very fast USB scanning, Excellent results.
Cons: NONE
The Bottom Line: Top notch scans at a premium price. If money is a concern, go for the 636 USB. Just as fast and will meet most people's needs.

| Digger's Full Review: Epson Perfection 1200U Flatbed Scanner |
I would have to say, choosing a scanner was probably the most difficult thing I've ever done. The biggest problem was, not being able to view results first hand. Sure you could see scans on the internet, that just didn't cut it for me. Nothing is like seeing it right on a monitor. Well unfortunately I was not able to do that, so I more or less had to rely on reviews like the ones on epinions.
I did much research on scanners, looking at all sorts of websites. Reading both pro and consumer reviews. What kept surfacing again and again, was the excellence of Epson scanners. No matter where you read, there was another glowing review about them.
I was originally going to go for the Epson 636 Perfection USB,then they came out with a newer model. Yep you guessed it, the 1200U! Was it worth the extra money? Yes and no.
First off, let me explain about the DPI issue. I was not aware that when you scan at higher DPI's, your files can by humongous! Yes you learn as you go! For the most part, you don't need any better than 600 DPI for color printing. And even at this level, your file for even a standard size photo, will be in the megabytes. That's right MEGABYTES! So to a degree, I bought this scanner being somewhat ingnorant of the facts of DPI. It takes forever to print a large file like this. Just something you might want to think about. Even with the fastest printer, it's painfully slow! Sometimes taking as long as 15 minutes!
If I were to do it again, I'm not sure whether I would go for this scanner? I more than likely would opt for the 636USB. To me, the exta cost is not merited, since I don't use the 1200 DPI resolution of this scanner. The software package is somewhat better, but the 636's software is more than adequate for most people. I believe they give you Adobe Photodeluxe 3 and the 1200U gives you Adobe Photodeluxe business edition. The Adobe program is the only one I use for this scanner. Although it does come with additional selections, such as Arcsoft Photo Printer, Presto Page Magic. All are useful, but not to me unfortunately.
I suggest anyone looking at these two models, seriously go through this DPI question in your mind. Ask some experts about it. I'm not an expert, but I do know I have never or will probably ever use 1200 DPI. I seriously doubt I would be able to notice the difference. I've seen photo's printed at 600 DPI and I could not tell the difference from a photo back from the developers! In fact they looked better to me! The only instance where 1200 DPI might come in useful, would be if you scan slides. But if your a picture scanner, you'll probably never use it.
