| stormin's Full Review: Epson Perfection 1200U Flatbed Scanner |
After I recently got married, I was bombarded with pictures from everywhere. Most of my family sent me their negatives, and I wanted to digitize them and create an online album. Unfortunately, most of the online photo companies charge too much to scan previously-developed negatives. Therefore, I set out to find a scanner capable of scanning negatives. I proceeded to search online for reviews, and I ended up deciding on the Epson Perfection 1220U Photo.
When the scanner arrived, I flipped through the small manual for a few minutes before setting up the scanner. I simply plugged it in to the USB port on my PC, plugged it into a power source, and started my computer. As soon as Windows 2000 booted, it recognized my new scanner and I performed a test scan without adding any software! However, I needed to use the Epson TWAIN driver so that I could truly utilize the full functionality of my scanner, so I installed the software that came with it. In the box is some OCR software, the TWAIN drivers, and some Epson software that enables you to control many functions of the scanner from its buttons on the front panel.
The scanner also ships with Adobe Photoshop LE, but I already had Adobe Photoshop installed, so I skipped the installation. After installing the software, I launched the TWAIN driver and scanned a magazine cover. Setting up the scanning options was VERY easy, and my first scan was exceptional.
My next experiment was with the transparency unit (the main reason why I got this scanner). I turned the scanner off, and attached the transparency unit. Then, I placed a strip of negatives on the adapter, and opened the TWAIN driver. I clicked a few options to tell it that I was scanning a negative, and it scanned it beautifully!
I spent the next few days (off and on hehe) scanning more than 300 negatives. Now, I have a collection of images of my wedding on my computer. I wouldn't have been able to complete this feat without this excellent scanner. Hands down, it's the best scanner I've ever used. I even scanned old newspaper clippings from high school (when I played football). This scanner is very versatile, and I will definitely enjoy it for years to come.
