The Bottom Line: I had bad experiences both setting up and using this product. Customer service was of little help as well. When it worked; however, it did work well.

| elmoebeesn's Full Review: Epson Perfection 1200U Flatbed Scanner |
In my recent quest to purchase a scanner I looked at many models, but found that this one was fairly highly thought of on this site so I decided to give it a try. Its certainly not that I feel that I was mislead, as I'm sure this scanner has the ability to work well, its just that the one I purchased didn't really do the job for me. Also, let me state that my scanning needs are fairly simple as all I really was trying to accomplish with this product was to have the newfound ability to send pictures over the Internet to friends, and I must admit, to occasionally send that photo over AOL to the young ladies that seem to constantly hound me for a "pic". Therefore, this product wasn't of extreme importance to me, but was mainly to be used for fun and therefore certainly wasn't worth the hassle it brought on.
First of all, I have found that this product takes a great deal of time to load onto the hard drive of a persons computer. Mine took somewhere in the neighborhood of four hours and I received several error messages along the way. This cause me to worry so I promptly called the people at Epson to see if they could help me. To my utter dismay, I was placed on hold for nearly 20 minutes each time I called and when I finally did get through I spoke with various individuals who read the same script to me over and over again and who obviously knew very little about my problem or computers in general. Eventually, with very little outside help, and at least a bit of luck, I was able to load the applications onto the computer and thought I would be ready for scanning fun.
Was this the end of my strife? NO! The first few pictures I scanned did turn out very nicely I will say. I was impressed by the color of the photos and the ability I had to crop the pictures in whatever shape and size I so desired. This; however, did not last long. It seems as if about 1 out of every 5 applications, scans, etc. I try to run off this machine simply do not work and provide me with that trusty error message. Again, when calling customer service for help with the matter they are of little help.
All in all, I really cannot deal with a machine that only works 80% of the time, even though I will say that when it works, it does work well. Furthermore, this application takes up a great deal of room on my hard drive, so overall I have decided to take this model back and get a new scanner. I have heard of others having similar troubles with this model, so all I can say is beware of this particular product. It may be a great addition for you; however, it may cause you real difficulties. This is not a chance most people are willing to take.
This scanner does come with an area of 8.5*11.7 which is good size and can perform most everyday scanning needs. Furthermore, this product comes with a USB interface that is compatible with most applications and allows the user to scan items in 36 bit color depth(much more than most available scanners). This recognizes over 60 billion colors and when working comes out very lifelike and real. I did scan a baseball card with this machine successfully and it came out looking just like the card itself. This does not mean that I recommend this product, though, I just wanted to give some of its specifications so that the reader can make a more informed judgement.
