My first printer was an Epson LQ-510 dot matrix printer, which I bought in 1989. This printer was built like a tank. I still have it and it still works, on the original ink cartridge. I had an older HP Desk Jet, which was a good printer, but the quality was not there, especially in the color. I saw the samples from the Epson and was impressed. Since I had a good track record with the LQ printer, I went for the Color-850Ne. I was not disappointed.
The quality was just like the samples and the speed was great for an inkjet printer. Paper does play a difference. So if you want good quality output, get good quality paper. Use Epson coated paper. Installing the driver was fairly simple as well as the Epson Net 2 software, used to configure the card. The card is a 10/100 Base. Configuring the card took a while, since I was use to DOS with its ARP and PING commands.
I did not like the fact it took about 2 minutes to warm up. It gets annoying. Also technical support for this printer is not that great. They seem to have 2 office, one in California and the other in Canada. The California office is pathetic. They always transfer me to Canada, since the California office does not do networks. I have an Epson scanner and the support is better. Also don't even bother e-mailing. They take days even weeks to answer.
Overall the printer itself is great but the support needs work.
