I own a Epson 1270. Mine probably is likely used more than the norm, as I also own a photo-lab. There are days when we print several hundred prints using this printer. My competition is the largest retailer in the U.S. fortunately for me they don't use the 1270. They paid quite a bit more for a printer which cannot provide the quality mine puts out.
In actual use, the Epson 1270 does an outstanding job of printing high quality, long lasting photos. Prints are expected to last 24 years. When used with good imaging software there are times when the prints from the 1270 look better than the original photographic prints.
It is a bit expensive for the average user, as ink cartridges run approximately $30 for the color cartridge and $25 for the black. Cartridges do last longer than I would have expected them to, but it can be very expensive for someone who prints a lot of documents.
The software and driver for this printer is also excellent. No trouble at all getting the printer up and running. The control panel for the printer is very detailed and gives the user plenty of control over the printing process. However, it is not very forgiving. Failure to select the correct paper type can lead to very poor print quality. The auto correction feature can be a curse as well as a blessing. On some photos the auto correction feature can discolor the print. It will take the user some time to become familiar with this feature.
Print times are very good when compared to other methods of printing photos. Print times are slow when compared to standard document printers. The quality of text is excellent and the printer is quite capable of handling most printing needs. Potential buyers will need to weigh the advantages of printing excellent quality photos against the cost of printing documents to determine the suitability of this printer.
As for me, I can't say enough about this printer. I use it for printing everything, though it's primary function is to print photos. I looked at nearly every alternative before deciding on this printer and feel comfortable that we made the right choice.
