This book starts with the traditional dark and stormy night and a wizard, Drum Billet, who is about to die. He decides to transfer his powers and his magical staff to an eighth son of an eighth son, since they are supposed to have extra magical significance. Just imagine the problems which arise when it turns out that this newborn baby is not a son, but a daughter!!! Drum has just given Discworld its first female wizard! She is called Eskarina, Esk for short.
The world was not quite ready for this yet, and Granny Weatherwax, the local witch, hopes to discourage Esk from using magic by hiding the staff. But when she accidentally starts turning her brother into a pig, it is time to do something. After a basis training as a witch, they go off to Ankh-Morpork to try to enroll Esk in the Unseen University, so that she can become a real wizard. They meet a fellow prospective student, called Simon, whose destiny seems to be entwined with Esk's. They make quite a team!
There are lots of funny adventures and happenings on their way to the university, which cause quite some people to stop underestimating little girls. This book is a good read, very funny and entertaining and will keep you captivated until you finish it. Not only that, but if it is your first Discworld novel, you will most likely want to read more of them now!
