A Great All Around Backpack, Equinox 33
Written: Oct 3, 2003
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:Comfortable, spacious, durable
Cons:Small mesh pockets, unpadded waistbelt
The Bottom Line: Great for hiking, can also be used for school.
I have always like Jansport backpacks. They are durable, look good, large and comfortable. The first one I had was a black, leather bottom Amarillo. That one did me well until the zipper wore out. The next Janspot I had was a black and blue Big Horn with four compression straps and five easy to organize compartments. That one lasted me three years until the zipper wore out. Hopefully Jansport has got the zipper situation figured out by now.
The thing that made me choose the Equinox over the other day packs is its size and it is an all around appearance. This was the first backpack I had bought off the internet. Being that I bought it off the internet I had to go by pictures and what they told me. Im pleased with it.
Some features I knew I wanted from the other backpacks I had were; compression straps, a durable bottom, organizer pocket, capacity of at least 2000 cubic inches, S curve straps and padding on the back. I looked up on the Jansport website what daypacks they had and eventually narrowed my search to the Citadel 33 and the Equinox 33. The main difference between the two is the Citadel 33 has Airlift straps, which are very comfortable, and it was about 20 dollars more. One thing that sold me on the Equinox 33 is that is has lashing straps on then bottom for items like tarps or tents.
The Equinox 33 also has plenty of space to carry stuff. There are three compartments, the main, larger items one; the organizer, middle one, and the smaller outer pocket for small quick accessible items. There is also plenty of spots on the outside of the pack for attaching stuff onto. There is a daisy chain for hanging clips off, mesh pockets on the side for water bottles, lashing straps, an ice ax loop.
The back is padded and has a meshy outer layer for ventilation. There are also groves in the backing to improve ventilation. The shoulder straps are S curved which make a large difference compared to straight back straps. There is also a dual adjust sternum strap and a 1.5 inch hip belt to help distribute the weight. The shoulder straps have thumbloops to make adjustments easy. Compression straps help keep the weight closer to you making it easier to carry. The handle on top the backpack is padded and makes it easy to lift the pack.
The zippers are a main part of any backpack. In the past Jansport packs I have had the main compartment zipper ran the entire length of the backpack. This meant that is the zipper did not hold then all the contents would fall out. On the Equinox 33 the main compartment zipper runs half the way of the pack and eliminates this problem. The zipper to the main compartment is a larger zipper which makes it able to carry more weight and there are no metal zipper pulls so there is not any clanking of zippers. The organizer pocket zipper runs the whole way which allows easy access to the smaller pockets for easy organization.
It comes in four color combinations:
otter / lichen / black
mediterranean blue / baltic / black
black / carbon / black
scarlet / cement / black
Statistics:
Fabric: 450D RipStop
Weight: 2 lbs. / 0.9 kg.
Dimentions: 20"Hx12"Wx7"D
Torso length: 15 in. to 21 in.
Hipbelt Length: 24 in. to 50 in.
Capacity: 2000 cu. in. / 32.8L
Finally:
I find the Equinox good for school use, hiking or anything in-between. It is comfortable, spacious and cost effective. I find it very useful and to date the best backpack I have owned.
I would highly recommend the Equinox 33.
