| noiseeee's Full Review: Ericsson Hpm 10 Digital Player - 32mb |
I've had this product for over a year now, and felt it was time to write about it's benefits, shortcomings, and ultimately why I had to move on....
First of all, I'll just review the mp3 player, not the package it came with - the MMC reader is OLD SCHOOL, and people will need a real MMC reader (usb as opposed to parallel port) to get the most from this player.
THINGS OF NOTE:
1) the sound is top-notch. i found this very surprising, and i am very particular about my music and sound.
2) this will only play MMC cards, not SD cards which look identical. MMC cards top out at 128MB, whereas SD cards go to 512 at the moment. So, don't get confused!! 128MB is therefore the most you will ever get to store with this.
3) be careful of where you put your phone! since this is a clip-on player, you have to remember that it is also clip-off. there is no secure latch which keeps it attached to your phone - it comes off very easily.
4) no 'resume' feature. should #3 happen to you, your mp3 player will start playing from the first song on the card
5) weird song orders!!! the song order plays in the order you saved them to the disc!! not alphabetical, not playlist. so, if you are particular about song order (ie: want to listen to an album instead of 'songs'), you have to copy one track over at a time.
6) no folder support - meaning you can't organize your songs into folders on your MMC card. in fact, folders won't even be seen.
7) no ID3 tag display. killer!
8) the headphone jack is SMALLER THAN NORMAL. this is due to the fact that the supplied earbuds act as a hands-free device too - when a call comes in while you're listening to music, the music gets put on hold, you press a button on your earbuds, and you can take the call. the music will resume when you hang up. however, due to the crappy sound of earbuds, i bought a converter at radioshack which lets me use my trusty, great headphones. this means that the hands-free option is gone for me, but that's fine - i hate looking like a schizophrenic, talking to nobody while i walk down the street!
9) you can't tell the time or scroll through the phone menu when you're listening to music.
well, those are the comments i think are worth noting. that being said, this is a terrific idea, looks amazing, and SOUNDS amazing. for a product that is at least two years old, it still holds up. the lack of good UI features is probably due to the fact that when released, phone/appliance mp3 players were virtually non-existent, and there was nothing to 'improve upon'. my biggest complaints (folder support, id3 tags, SD cards) could all be fixed by a firmware update, but that just isn't going to happen. still, if you can find this for $50 or less (and have a MMC card), its worth it.
