The Ericcson R380 is a more recent offering from this mobile phone manufacturer and it contains a new twist. The convergence of the mobile phone and PDA/handheld computing device.
The R380 offers dual-band reception with features such as WAP, SMS (short messaging service - like AOL IM), and email. However, its flip-open PDA offers additional tools including an address book, calendar, and notepad all of which you can synchronize with Outlook or Lotus Notes.
The synching process was relatively quick and easy. Software installation from the CD prooved effortless, though it took about 5-8 minutes to process all the installation files. The phone can hold up to 200 emails, 1000 contacts, 100 notes, or 700 calendar appointments in it 1.2MB of memory. Personally, I think they should have made a smart-disk memory slot so you can choose how much memory you want. 1.2MB is rather limited, and if the user had the option to buy a 64MB SmartDisk there would be no limitations.
Surprisingly, this phone only weighs 5.8oz which is on the lighter end of the mobile phone spectrum AND it includes that PDA functions. The PDA screen is of adequate size and the stylus house is embedded in the battery. The touch-screen had good resolution and its large size compared to that of standard cell phones allowed easy web browsing and email reading. Handwriting recognition through JOT worked well, but I usually stuck with the onscreen keyboard. One day there will be a software company that learns and makes a customizable handwiriting recognition schema. I don't want to learn Palm-Writing! I want it to learn MY writing!
Phone calls can be placed using the dial-pad, the address book, or by voice activation.
The phone has a built-in modem and IrDA Infrared port which can be used to send Virtual Business Cards and the phone supports WTLS - Wireless Transport Layer Security - for secure banking and other financial transactions.
Overall, its a great phone and for those uses who have mobile phones and PDA's its worth considering. However, I will stick with my Samsung 6100 and Rex 6000 MicroPDA for the moment.
