edellks's Full Review: Escort Passport 8500 X50 Radar Detector
I had tried the original Escort Passport back in the 80's and that thing falsed about every 30 seconds. Escort had the "try it for 30 days" program back then as well, so it got returned. Since then, I have owned different brands such as Whistler and Cobra. They did the trick for a while, but I've realized I don't pick up the laser they're using now.
Since I was in the market again and Escort was selling off some traded-in 8500's and offered a money-back satisfaction guarantee, I thought I'd give them another try.
This review could all be boiled down to one word - WOW!!!! Even though this is a dated model, it works great. On my 38-mile commute, it did not false when going past Wal-Mart or Lowe's or other things that would routinely trip the Cobra, but being close to a cell tower did get it to chirp. It picked up genuine radar around a bend about 1/4 mile away before the source was in sight.
Now I can see why everyone praises this company. They made some vast improvements since their original model. I thought I was going to need the 9500i to keep false alarms to a minimum, but that's just not the case. This thing is excellent at filtering out the garbage and yet being extremely sensitive on the real thing. I only hope laser picks up as well as it does radar.
For the record, I don't go around flying down the roads. I have this for those times when I'm focused on something other than my speed and I stroll into a speed trap. For me it's a reminder, not a tool. And with more and more police equipped with speed measuring devices, I'm being 'reminded' quite often. :)
