soupcraze's Full Review: Escort Shifter ZR3 Radar Detector
Lidar guns are the most feared tool that it's use by traffic law enforcement. Lidar guns unlike radar guns use a laser to clock your vehicle. This means that a detector won't be able to pick it up until it's too late. Whether you're using a cheapo Radio Shack detector or the Valentine One, you're already a gonner. For a while I've been using solely a Valentine One without a laser jammer, and have been hit a couple of times. I got lucky then, but I wasn't going to take any chances. After a hard search, I came up with the Escort ZR-3 which I added to my new car. Here's what I found with it:
-Price-
*Currently, the Escort ZR-3 is about $399.99. When it first came out, it was $499.99. This is considerably expensive, but well worth the cost. It takes only one lidar ticket to spoil your day. At first, I was looking at the cheap K40 Diffuser Plus jamming system. However, it only surrounds the plate, so I figured that if the cop aimed anywhere else, I'd be clocked. Also, the K40 is older technology, and it isn't formidable against some guns in use today. Then I looked at the Bel Laserpro 904, but I did like the central unit on the Escort ZR-3 better, they are both the same and similar in price. Then I looked at Blinder products which are also claimed to be high-end on the market. I was interested in the Blinder M30 X-Treme which goes for almost the same price as the Escort. However, I decided to go with Escort since they are a reputable name in the radar business, and their Passport 8500 definitely proved their competance in the market. It's a hard choice, but Escort is a name that you can trust in the end. It's also a newer entry, while Lidatek and K40 seem to be getting old. It's your choice, choose wisely.
-What You Get-
*The Escort ZR-3 comes with the interface module which has two lights indicating whether you are being lasered from the front, or from the rear. There are three jamming modules, two that go in the front, and one in the rear. A majority of the time, you are jammed from the front, and from my experiences, the Escort ZR-3 performed its duty. The Escort ZR-3 has a very easy and simple to use interface, and has even a remote mute button. Also, if you own an Escort Passport 8500, you can link up the Escort ZR-3 to it. But, I enjoy using it with my Valentine One.
-Performance-
*It's very difficult to truly rate a laser jammer. But it has proven itself worthy, at least knowing that I would've had a ticket if I hadn't been hit. I have been travelling I-294 more often, and have been lasered on some occassions. I was pulling off fairly high-speeds around the 70s to 80s, and the Escort ZR-3 quickly alerted me of laser. Then so did the Valentine One. I slowed down, and then it went to work. Then wala, I was cruising past the cops and they didn't go after. I also got lasered in the suburbs on one occassion, and yet again, I was speeding and didn't get pulled over... This seems to show that the Escort ZR-3 is effective.
-The Verdict-
*Anyone will tell you that once you're hit by laser, you're done for. That doesn't have to be true. It's not cheap, but it's definitely worth it. I'd have to say that the Escort ZR-3 is an excellent addition to anyone's car who is serious about speeding, especially in areas that use lidar. If you're one of the many people who use an Escort Passport 8500, the Escort ZR-3 can be hooked up to it. Has it saved me? Oh yes!
