Estee Lauder All Day Lipstick: WHO SLAPPED THE BABY???
Written: Dec 01 '00 (Updated Jul 12 '01)
Pros:very emollient, concentrated color, nice selection of colors
Cons:does not stay on, odor overbearing, does not stain lips, feels sticky
The Bottom Line: If you like to leave your mark everywhere but on your lips, then this lipstick is for you.
Our daughter is adorable. There are no two ways about it. She is a cuddly affectionate and very loving little kid. She loves hugs and kisses. Unless you are a stranger, of course. If she does not know you, not even the local fire engines offer her competition in piercing loud noises.
It is not uncommon for her to screech horribly, which sends us all running to see what is the matter. When we frantically examine the immediate landscape to see what could be the current threat posed to our little ear splitting toddler, we will often see a tiny dot on the horizon at the top of the hill. It could be a fuel truck, the mail man, or a dog. Hard to recognize that far away, but you can tell it is moving. It can be rather nerve wracking at times.
Then there is the incessant need to kick as if auditioning for a part with the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes. Changing a diaper can be a very abusive experience - for the diaper changer, that is. A suit of armor would be nice to offer protection from the little girl turned windmill when attempting to change a dirty diaper. I have often toyed with the idea that if I quickly put her in a pool when in this kicking mode, that she would break any world's record for water speed.
But, of course, we do not own a pool, nor are we near one. So I guess that theory will never be tested.
I happened to find out that I was going to be the recipient of a beautiful collection of Estee Lauder make up for Christmas. Wow. What a dream. I could not wait. In fact, after carefully exploring the Beauty world of Epinions, I was elated. ANOTHER CHANCE TO EVALUATE PRODUCTS!!! YIPPEE!
I was even further excited when on my recent birthday, a beautifully wrapped package awaited me on the table. Since I already knew I was getting the make up kit, my dear husband decided to give it to me for my birthday. HOORAY!
I picked the lipstick to audition first. Since the moment I opened the package, my lips have been the proud host of Estee Lauder All Day Lipstick in the Rosa Rosa color.
I put it on before dinner. I put it on after dinner. I put it on before bed. I reapplied in the morning............and so on.
It was time to clean up the house a little bit and right on schedule, our little powerhouse came running up to me.
"UG?"
I promptly replied with a big warm hug.
" ISS?"
I smiled broadly as I planted lots of happy kisses all over her face. Satisfied and giggling, she ran off to her brother. I could hear her repeating the requests in the other room.
I grinned to myself thinking that no one else was luckier than we were to have such a wonderful, yet challenging little girl running around the house.
A few minutes later, I heard the thunder of little feet.
I turned around all of a sudden, surprising the tiny ball of energy which brought forth another round of giggles and hugs and kisses.
Yessir. I was a really blessed woman to have such a nice family.
" Stop it! I said STOP IT"
My little reverie was interrupted by the usual hollering when little sister was intruding upon sacred teenage territory.
" HEY! I SAID LEAVE IT ALONE"
There was the usual interchange of deep reverberating hollering and guttural retorts. Then the pitch quickly rose to piercing. It sounded like she was being tortured. A very effective way for a little tot to get her way from "mean" big brother (who would not hurt a flea).
I rolled my eyes in amused frustration. Things were definitely normal.
After the shrieking and sounds of scuffling subsided, I heard the usual exasperated request.
" Why don't you go see Mom?
Then the customary pounding of feet as the 2 ft tall dynamo came shooting around the corner, skidded on the floor and after running in place with feet slipping like something off of Looney Tunes, she ran over to me and decided to play the martyr.
I looked at her face with contrived compassion and was shocked at what I saw. There were bruises all over her face.
" WHAT DID YOU DO TO THE BABY?????!!!???", I thundered.
I had a sick feeling in my stomach. Had my complacent loving son turned into a maniac?
" Nothing." was the bored reply.
" Now look, I heard you battling in there, but you did not have to hit your sister!"
" HIT HER???? THAT LITTLE BRAT WAS HITTING ME WITH A STICK!! I DID NOT DO ANYTHING!!!!
" THEN WHERE DID SHE GET ALL OF THESE BRUISES? "
" BRUISES???? I HAVE BRUISES. SHE DID NOT GET CLOSE ENOUGH FOR BRUISES!!!"
I was very angry now. I mean, I know that this girl can be a hand full, but hitting her in the face was inexcusable. I marched into his room ready for battle, my little toddler in tow with a triumphant look in her face.
" Now you look at me and tell me that there are no bruises on her face."
I was seething.
" I DON'T KNOW HOW SHE GOT THOSE. SHE PROBABLY DID IT HERSELF!
" OH, NO YOU DON'T, YOU ARE NOT GOING TO BLAME YOUR SISTER FOR SOMETHING YOU DID. WHY WOULD SHE SLAP HERSELF IN THE FACE?????? HMMMMMMMMM?????"
" Mom, why does that kid do anything that she does? I DON'T KNOW!!!
I could tell that he was hurt that I would ever imply that he would intentionally hurt his sister. They might fight, but she was completely precious to him. However, I was on a roll.
By this time, the baby was crying. I think that this little charade had gone farther than she expected and now her beloved brother was in trouble. I reached down and kissed her over and over on her cheek.
Man, these bruises were getting worse by the minute.
Then she hit me on the mouth. I was a bit irritated and about to yell at her when I noticed that there was a big red mark on her hand.
A big red mark in the shape of lips.
I felt the color rise in my face.
Then I remembered the time in the doctor's office when I had brought her in for a check up. Just before the doctor had come in, I was horrified to see really bad bruises all over our daughter's face. I was sweating and stressed out trying to think about what had happened. Then it had dawned on me. I was wearing Cover Girl Self Renewing Lipstick in the color Midnight Rose. The doctor and I had enjoyed a good laugh over that one.
Right now, I felt ashamed.
When I timidly went into the bedroom to apologize to my poor wronged son, I felt really stupid. After we had cooled down a bit and worked it out, we had a good laugh again.
....and baby instigator spent some time out in her playpen. No more bruises today........
The Estee Lauder All Day Lipstick in color Rosa Rosa is a different kind of lipstick than I have worn before. It is very creamy. The color is concentrated more so than many other lipsticks that I have worn. This is a matte color.
Color
Lipsticks are a tricky thing to work with. What the name of the color is, has about a 50% chance of being an accurate description of what you actually get.
The color that the tube actually houses might look pink, but the dyes and stains that are contained in the lipstick can do strange things once on the skin.
For instance, it is not uncommon for a very pale and light pink to become orange or red after it is on for a while. On the other hand, it is also typical for a nice dark looking lipstick to go on really lightly and fade away instead of staying dark on the lips.
This color, Rosa Rosa is what I would term a medium to dark pink. It is a clear bright pink with slight leanings toward red. It is similar to the pink you see when you are in a computer paint program and you are offered basic colors to use- that pink in there is a close call. Again, this color is a matte color.
Staying power
Of all of the lipsticks that I own and have tried, I must say that this one is a real disappointment to me in this category. Although it goes on very concentrated and thickly, the color does not stay on the lips very well (as you will recall, most of it landed on my daughter's face). There is very little staining. In some ways that is good if you are planning to change colors, but not good if you still want to look like you are wearing SOMETHING after you eat or drink.
I find that this lipstick has to be reapplied almost constantly just to maintain a consistent color on the lips. I do not have the time to be attached to a mirror for that.
Application
Estee Lauder All Day Lipstick goes on very creamy. The coverage is excellent. However, the feeling from this lipstick is kind of strange. I would say that it feels kind of sticky. The comparison for me would be a cross between sugar sticky and the oil in my deep fryer that sticks to the sides and the lid making it tacky to the touch.
Let's take a look at the ingredients.
Ingredients
Castor Oil (Ricinus Communis), oleyl oleate, candelilla wax, beeswax, ozokerite, polydecene, carnuba wax, sorbitan sesquioleate ( AHA! I KNEW THERE WAS A STICKY SWEET THING IN HERE), lanolin, isodecyl neopendinate, lecithin, peach kernel oil, tocopherol (VITAMIN E OF SORTS), Ascorbyl palminate (VITAMIN C DERIVATIVE ? )----and lots of color and dye ingredients that vary per lipstick.
In my opinion, there is a form of oil in here that has been processed to the point of being sticky- like I explained the oil to be in my deep fryer. Put together with the sorbitol derrivative, I think that is what is giving me that tacky rather annoying feeling to this lipstick.
Now, the vitamin E, lecithin, lanolin, and castor oil do make this lipstick have more emollient properties than many that I have tried. I would guess that the peach kernel oil also contributes to that as well.
I make my own lip balm with apricot kernel oil as well as castor oil and vitamin E, and they do add some nice properties to the lips.
Other observations
The odor.
I have to say that one of the most annoying things to me is to have a flavor and odor in my lipstick that is pungent, but not pleasant. This lipstick has that effect. It reminds me of the old lipsticks that my grandmother and mother used to wear when I was little. The smell is a bit too much for me, but not totally intolerable.
One of the ingredients that I did leave off of the above list was PARFUM!!!!! Why add fragrance to lipstick???? At least THAT kind!
The tube is pretty typical. It is round , easy to use, beige in color, and the top fits in securely. However, I do see a tendency in the tube to turn as it is handled. This seems to make an atmosphere for that smashed lipstick that we all hate when we take off the cover and see that the lipstick has been turned up into the cover.
I have another tube of Estee Lauder All Day Lipstick that I will be testing soon. I will edit my review at the conclusion of that test to encompass that results of that test. So far, I have found the results to be the same.
This lipstick is very softening and concentrated when you first put it on. It does not make my lips peel. It is a nice lipstick to wear if your lips are dry and cracked because of that.
However, the odor is a bit overbearing. The color does not stay on well at all. The feeling of this product is a little too sticky for me.
For the price, I would rather purchase a few Maybelline or Cover Girl lipsticks in different colors. I think they last longer and they do not feel sticky or have that slightly noxious odor.
