Pros: Umm, Umm, Umm...
Cons: Burns! Hard to use, insanely expensive, and leaves red splotches.
For all special occasions, birthdays and Christmass alike, my mother in law loves to spoil me with loads of great beauty samples. A little while back, she sent me a trial size bottle of the Estee Lauder Idealist and I immediately fell in love. It made my skin soft and silky like a babys bottom, and wore excellent underneath my makeup. When I ran out, I ran to my nearest Navy Exchange beauty counters to pick up a full size bottle. While browsing about, I noticed that Estee Lauder also had another product that fits in practically the same category: Estee Lauder Idealist Micro-D.
I looked over both products, and price, usage, and size and determined that the latter would be the best deal because 1) They cost the same 2) You get more product for your money (2.5 oz vs 1.0 oz) and 3) The Micro D kit will last longer since you only use it once to twice a week vs twice a day. Of course you wouldnt know that youre only supposed to use this product one to two times a week unless you open up the huge map size paper-let (Im making up my own words here!) and scan both sides for the usage directions since they didnt print them on the box or the product itself. So thats kind of a pain. But this pamphlet does have a ton of information about this product as well as the original Idealist. Apparently, youre supposed to use both of these products hand in hand, but really I just couldnt afford that all at once. I lucked out and managed to pay only $39.00 for this product since I bought it on base and its tax free. I know youre shaking your head and thinking Only $39.00!? but considering that most places sell it for about $46.00 plus tax I think I got a great deal.
So, we know that this product is insanely expensive, but what does it do and does it work as well as the Estee Lauder Idealist? Well, according to the pamphlet: This gentle, at-home alternative to micro-dermabrasion is the ideal partner to Idealist Skin Refinisher. Delivers dramatic skin resurfacing benefits with our exclusive TripleSphere Refinishing System. Deep, thermal action warms skin to help open, detoxify and minimize pores. One application, and the radiant skin you want is revealed. Your ideal skin. No appointment necessary. Feel it. Smooth and polished. See it. Clearer, less visibly lined and virtually pore less. Perfect for all skin types. Dermatologist-tested. Works Well with Idealist Skin Refinisher.
Well, this sounds all fine and dandy, but being the skeptic that I am I had my guinea pig husband try it out first! Hey he has larger pores than I do, so I was just trying to help! I was kind of worried about the warming sensation, and my fears seemed justified when I heard him yelp It feels like acid is burning my face off! So, with trepidation, I jumped in the shower (because I hate washing my face at the sink I get water everywhere), and applied the product to my face in circles as it suggests. The warming sensation was quite a little bit more than warm, but not as bad as my big baby of a husband has suggested, and I was slightly disappointed that the sensation only lasts for a very briefs couple of seconds. The consistency of the product is very grainy and slippery you have to be very careful because itll slip right out of your hand, and its hard to spread around your skin.
When I stepped out of the shower and toweled off, I examined the results of my skin and found mixed emotions. On one hand my pores did look really minimized, but my skin was blotchy and red. The next morning I noticed several of the red spots had remained and thats not normal for my skin. Due to the uncomfortable sensation and results I would not recommend this product to anyone with sensitive skin at all.
I went ahead and bought a 1 oz container of the Estee Lauder Idealist to see if maybe using the two products together as recommended would produce more agreeable results, but it doesnt really make a difference. Estee Lauder claims that the Idealist is supposed to reduce redness (that the Micro-D causes!), but it didnt do so.
I have used this product several times, and find that the results vary with the different face washes I use before applying the Micro-D. For instance, when paired with my favorite pore reducing cleanser Biore Pore Perfect Pore Unclogging Scrub I dont notice any results at all, but I still get the redness, and when paired with the Biore Warming Anti-Blackhead Cream Cleanser (which is much more gentle and easy to use, but not as good as the other Biore product) the warming sensation of the Micro-D really does feel like acid is burning your face off.
In conclusion, perhaps the Estee Lauder Idealist Micro-D will work for some, but it didnt work for me and I wouldnt recommend it to be used by any other twenty-somethings because there are many other products that outshine this one, and I most definitely wouldnt recommend this to anyone with sensitive skin. You may go through the Estee Lauder Idealist much quicker, but this product is so much more worth it in the end! If you havent tried it yet, its time to spoil yourself!
