Pros: breeders use it for show dogs, good for growth and digestion
Cons: expensive, gives puppy extra energy, made my puppy shed profusely
The Bottom Line: Breeders may swear by this food but for a family puppy I would not recommend Eukanuba. It made my puppy go nuts and her coat was horrible.

| cbgresh's Full Review: Eukanuba Large Breed formula |
Maggie McMae entered our home 4 weeks ago and she has been growing like a weed ever since. Maggie is a Golden Retriever puppy and will weigh over 50 pounds(closer to 100 #) at maturity. The breeder was feeding her Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy Formula food and that is what we fed her for the first two weeks she lived with us. She was very high energy, much more than we expected from a puppy at this age. She was constantly ripping the newspaper we had down for her to do her business on, she would chew on the woodwork in the room she stays in and basically flip out 2-4 times a day and run circles around her room. I know she is a puppy and puppy's need to burn off energy. Maggie was let loose in our backyard to run and play, either alone or with one member or more of our family. She had balls to play with, a Kong to chew on and lots of other good puppy toys to occupy her.
Maggie sheds! Yes, I know Golden retrievers sheds, but this was ridiculous! Shedding isn't the right word to describe the amount of hair this puppy was losing. She was losing hair in clumps and actually getting thin on her back. Her hair wasn't soft and shiny like a well fed puppy's should. It was alarming!
The Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy Food was want we gave her simply on the advice of the breeder(reputable by the way and not a puppy mill). Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy Food is made up of 25% protein, 36% fat and 39% carbs. There are 362 kcal per cup. For a puppy of 30 pounds they recommend 4 cups per day. The main ingredients in the food are chicken, chicken by products(what are they anyway?), corn meal, grain sorgham, whole grain barley, fish meal, rice flour, chicken fat and dried brewers yeast.
Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy Food is not available in all areas. I had a difficult time finding a pet supplier that carried it in large bags. The puppy food comes in 8#,20# and 40# bags. The 20# bag cost $22.48 at the supplier I located. It was one of the most expensive foods the supplier sold. Eukanuba is made by Iams Company, but I noticed the Iams brand puppy food was only $17.99 for a 20# bag. I thought that was interesting.
Finally after a couple weeks of going batty with "Maggie the one puppy destructo machine" we thought she may be getting the extra energy from the puppy food. So we went on a search for a different brand. My husband wanted to feed her Purina Puppy Chow, but I wanted to go for a middle of the road food price-wise. I looked at all the foods on the market and finally decided upon Purina O.N.E. puppy food.
Maggie is a changed puppy. She isn't as rambunctious. Her coat is softer and she rarely sheds. Her eyes are gleaming and shiny and she seems to be in much better spirits. She is having an easier time with her bowel movements and doesn't seem as desperate to eat the food when we put it in her bowl. She loves her Purina O.N.E., but isn't attacking the bowl.
We spoke with the vet last week when Maggie went in to his office to get shots and a check up. He said that the Purina O.N.E. is a great choice and that dog foods made for large breed puppies often will give them extra energy. He also recommends that the larger breed puppies are switched to dog food rather than puppy food at 9 months. I thought his vote of confidence in our decision to change puppy foods was rather interesting.
