A recent problem with our older cat, appropriately named Kitty, and his - uh - bowels required a trip to the vet. He had been having extremely bloody stools and had taken to not using the litter box when this occurred. Having just survived the 2 week ordeal of house training our puppy, I simply wasnt ready or in the mood for this new treat.
The vet assured me that a bloody stool isnt a bad sign, even one or two a week. Frankly that didnt reassure me one bit. However a complete checkup, if invasive, and blood work proved her predication to be true. She did recommend that Kitty receive a special food to get her over the hump, as it were.
Now really, how can you feed a special food to just one cat? Any time you open a can in our house the kitchen is lined with purring paws, tails all in the air and wanting to be your new best friend. But we made the attempt.
The Attempt
Day one - I opened the can of food and scooped out one third of the contents. First I might mention that the visual contents were quite nasty. It resembled a quite firm pate or even a liverwurst gone bad. The product was firm in texture, not soft and flaky like our regular canned food. Cutting it with a knife into small chunks, I put it down for Kitty while putting out the regular canned food for the other two pigs. Kitty rejected it immediately. Even Six, who is practically a shark, turned tail on the goo and Ashes, our junkyard cat that will eat anything, turned tail and ran away. Well, that went well.
Day two - retrieving the food from the fridge, I mixed one third with their regular canned food, figuring, what the hey - all the cats are older it cant hurt any of them. And the canned food being served that evening was with tuna and shrimp. I mixed this cocktail all together and put the plate down for all three to enjoy. They somehow managed to eat all the good food without getting barely a morsel of the junk down their pallets. How do they do that? At the end of the meal almost the entire one third can of the Low Residue food remained on the plate.
Getting these cats to eat that crap was like trying to nail Jell-O to the wall. Aint happening.
Day three - tossed the remaining one third in the trash. Still have two cans left if anyone is interested and I wont even charge you the $1.00 each the vet charged me for them. Its a steal at half the price, bids open now.
What it is
This is designed as a nutrition aid to manage gastrointestinal conditions. Used mainly for vomiting, diarrhea, gas or constipation it is also used to help with colitis, pancreatitis, dietary problems and inflamed bowel. Offered as a special dietary formula you can only get this product through your vet.
It offers a special blend of fibers for the intestinal tract, a low fat level for pets that have problems with digestion and fat absorption, enhances nutrient absorption and they say it is extremely palatable. Sure, if you can get the guys to even consider eating it, maybe it is.

Overall impression
At least in this household and with these three cats, it was a failure. They refused to eat the goop. Of course they are spoiled old fools but you simply cant force the food down their gullets you know. The product itself was unattractive in look and the texture was solid, not flaky or tender feeling. It was like a big gray lump of putty in the can and on the plate.
Like I said, Ive still got two cans left - going to the highest bidder
Thanks,
Susi
p.s. thanks once again to Billie ladysmom who even with her broken wrist and collarbone was kind enough to add this item to the data base for me.
