| jasperblu's Full Review: Eukanuba Premium Performance formula |
I have been a dog owner all my life and I've tried just about every dog food on the market. From other premium brands (such as Science Diet, Iams, Nutromax), to grocery store brands (Pedigree), to specialty vet diets, etc. but I've had the best results with Eukanuba by far.
My current two dogs thrive on the Eukanuba Premium Performance. Both dogs are well over 75 pounds, are very active (high energy) and have healthy appetites.
I go through a 40 pound bag of Eukanuba about every 3 weeks; each 40 pound bag costs about $39 + tax here in Southern CA. Not cheap, I admit.
This dog food has the least amount of grain and other non-desirable fillers and the highest amount of protein that I've found in a dog food (in comparison to Science Diet for example, which is very high in grains).
Their coats are shiny, their teeth are clean, their energy levels are high, and they have fewer stomach troubles, which my Coonhound is prone to.
They both really like the taste of the food too - a good thing, because my Australian Cattle Dog turns up his nose at nearly ever other kibble on the market. In addition, my ACD has severe hip dysplasia in both hips and the vitamin/mineral/fatty acids content of this food seem to aliviate some of the joint stiffness associated with the dysplasia.
I can't say personally what it is about this food that tastes good to my dogs (nor am I about to taste it to find out), but I do know they clean their bowels every time I feed them with this food. I often add cottage cheese or eggs and vegetables like carrots to their food as well, to aid in digestion and to jazz up their food a little. Yes, even dogs need their veggies!
The kibbles of this food are a good round size. They are firm and hold up well even when you soak them with warm water or other liquid. There is also a "small bite" kibble size available, which I would recommend for smaller dogs (my parents use this "small bites" version for their 3 year old Pomeranian).
I don't have to give them as much food either, they each only get about 2 1/2 cups per day. When using other "premium" brands, such as Science Diet, I've had serve each dog far more food to keep them full.
Please note that because this food has more calories, especially from protein, be careful that you don't over-feed your dog/s or you might end up with a very chubby pet, (albeit a pet with a beautiful shiny coat and clean white teeth). This food is really best for active, high energy animals or for those dogs that have high performance expectations.
The crude protein (chicken, fish oils, etc.) is not less than 30% of the total composition of the food. Grains/fiber make up another 20%. This food also contains a high level of Omega fatty acids, which are good for their bones and coats and overall health. Eukanuba foods in general also promote good dental health.
Again, this food is NOT cheap. You will find that it is probably the most expensive food in the pet store. But, since it keeps my dogs healthy and well-nourished, I will continue to use it exclusively.
