Last year when my Dirt Devil Power Stick stopped working I started utilizing the Eureka Bagless Boss that I purchased on impulse when shopping for a microwave last year. It was obvious I needed something that would clean up the food particles and other residue on the carpets, so I decided on the Eureka 402A Upright Vacuum.

I placed this on my wish list at amazon.com and tried several auctions with ebay, but in the end I opted to head over to Kmart and pick one up on April 4, 2004 for $39.99. The box states this is the Eureka 402A Upright Vacuum with the Kmart receipt referencing this as the Boss Lite. The name Eureka The Boss Super Lite is listed on the clear dust cup section of the unit.
As the single parent to two children I require products that have simple and minor assembly, so the Eureka 402A Upright Vacuum was chosen based on this emphasis, as well as being a bagless light-weight product. I like the bright yellow and black design with the option of releasing the handle for storing and using for quick pick-ups. However, I have noticed I feel pain in my back after using the Eureka 402A Upright Vacuum when I have the handle in the lower position.
Upon removing the Eureka 402A Upright Vacuum from the box the only step needed is to insert the handle into the slot and then upwrap the cord. The first day home I used this twice around the house and would have given a glowing report had I posted a review immediately that day. Most other products that I purchase I need to peruse the owners guide in depth to get a clear picture of how to assemble and use. It was actually a few days before I found the need to glance through the owners guide of the Eureka 402A Upright Vacuum.
I tend to be a hyperactive person doing many things around the house and have noted that twice now the Eureka 402A Upright Vacuum has tipped over. This happened when I was in a rush to bring it into a room and did not place the vacuum in the straight upright position. The first time it fell to the ground I was surprised and glad my younger son was not in the room, since it could have hit him on impact. Now I know to take the time to click into place before heading out the room for another chore.
The two annoying aspects of the Eureka 402A Upright Vacuum would be the loud shrill this makes when in either the carpet or floor mode. It is not a noise to get accustomed to, and if your child is irritated by vacuum cleaners this is one to save for utilization when children are at school. I have lucked out that my kids are not bothered by vacuum noise, probably because I was always vacuuming under their cribs as they napped. The other bothersome feature to the Eureka 402A Upright Vacuum is the cord that reaches twenty feet. With the other Eureka I was stuck with a very small cord, but I got used to it. Now with this cord I have to keep it in my hand as I go through the house. It does not really work well with the cord wrapped around the handle as you vacuum.
There is no real description in the owner's guide on how to store the cord, so I just wrap it around the handle after I have pressed the release button for it to be shorter. Since I have many throw rugs in the house I have a hard time getting items pulled off of these when in the carpet mode on the Eureka 402A Upright Vacuum. The frays on the throw rugs get stuck inside the brush roller so I tend to gloss over these rugs and remove food particles by hand. I have tried the floor mode with the throw rugs as well.
We do not have stairs in our house as it is one level only, but located below the dust cup latch is a hand grip for stair cleaning. When going from room to room within the house it is easy to just tap on the floor nozzle to clean around. The nozzle is equipped with Edge Kleener.
While cleaning you can view the dirt arriving inside the dust cup and know when the time for emptying the contents. This is a simple step in grabbing the black lever below the black handle to open up and shake into the garbage. When placing back into the Eureka 402A Upright Vacuum you need to make sure it snaps into place. You can tell by the top of the clear plastic cover affixed to a yellow lever.
The first time I removed and emptied the dust cup was a breeze, but I did have to get my hand inside and pull out some of the contents since it was stuck. There is no residue falling on the floor when you are in this process like other units are capable of. This did not bother my asthma either. I placed the dust cup back into the middle compartment and stored the Eureka 402A Upright Vacuum. The next time I used this I noticed the plastic was not inserted properly since it did not rest inside flat. There was no different noise emitting from the unit and I quickly unplugged it and reinserted it to snap into place.
The directions do show how to remove the filter and use the scraper to remove debris from the filter. With one month of use I do not think I need to do this just yet. The product will need to be registered through mail or online. There is an order form to get additional parts like the handle, dust cup and filter. If you need to return the unit you do not do this at the store you purchased. There are toll-free numbers to call for U.S. and Mexico to speak with customer service.
The warranty is good for one year and does not cover misuse or neglect. They will determine if they replace or repair the unit. This is a true lightweight product that is not heavy to lift or move from room to room. With the long cord you can do more than one room without having to plug and unplug, just as long as you keep your eye on the cord since you do not want to run over it. This should be stored in a cool, dry place and for indoor use only. Do not use with wet hands to remove plug. There are no attachments to this unit. The cleaning effectiveness per amp is 16.0.
My nine-year old liked using the Eureka 402A Upright Vacuum and had no problems with moving it around one room. The noise is startling at first and odd sounding, but I use it briefly a few times a day with no problem.
My seven-year old is a mouth stuffer and leaves food on the floor in his path. The pringles were easy to pick up off the carpets, but the potato sticks are a bit thicker and stubbier, so they posed a problem and were spit back out a few times. When this happened I cut out the hair on the nozzle and it got better suction. The area by the front door gets a lot of grass and leaves from the wind when door is left open and they picked right up.
I am pleased with the results of the Eureka 402A Upright Vacuum with the reasonable price and ease in using.
