bookbabe's Full Review: Eureka 431A Optima Bagless Upright Vacuum
I love this vacuum.
First of all, I love it's light weight, and how powerful it is for it's size. The handle is, well, handy, very comfortable to use, and I have problems with repetitive motion and grip on my right-hand side. The switches, canister-release and such are all easy to use; I find it to be intuitively designed. It works well on both carpet and floors, and tucks away nicely in my front closet, right alongside the shoe shelves. I find the color unexpected, whimsical, cheerful and modern.
This vacuum is louder than I expected given it's size, but I am also sensitive to noise. I don't find the canister itself too difficult or annoying to empty: I do so after each use, anyway, so canister size is not an issue for me. I simply empty it into a used plastic grocery bag, give it a quick swipe with a damp paper towel, and that's it. The filter, which I also try to clean after each use, is more time-consuming, however. Even after tapping it into the trash bag, dust remains in the filter's ridges and up under a little piece of plastic that has to do with the lock mechanism, so cleaning this requires a little digging/scraping. This might seem a bit much to some people, but I'm a gal who cleans with toothbrushes, so...
Overall, I find the loudness and filter cleaning worth the good suction job this little vacuum does. For a family with lots of kids and animals, high traffic in the house, shoes on all the carpets, etc., I would want something bigger, but, my household is made up of 3 women, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, 2 cats (one long-haired) and some as-of-yet unidentified piece of furniture or bedding that is losing down feathers. Shoes are mostly off in the house, but the doors are also usually open (to dust, sneaky pine needles, etc.). And this cute little vacuum manages it all wonderfully.
