lovehifi's Full Review: Eureka 431A Optima Bagless Upright Vacuum
We've gone through so many vacuums in our house. We vacuum every day. We've owned KENMORE, HOOVER, BISSEL and others, several costing $200-$$279.
We decided to buy this EUREKA OPTIMA because it was on sale (clearance) at HHGREG for only $38! We thought it would be a piece of junk.
What a pleasant surprise. We all agree, this EUREKA has better suction than any other vacuum we've ever owned. Our carpets suddenly look almost new. We can't believe how much dog hair and lint is being picked up.
12 AMPS! Just like the big boys. Not a weak motor. Not weak suction.
Extremely light weight. Easy to use. Adjustable handle height works for everyone.
The BRUSH ROLLER can be TURNED OFF to allow HARD FLOOR VACUUMING AS WELL! Just a flick of the switch to go from carpet to floor.
A HOSE is also included. There is a brush attachment. And a crevice tool. Works great on the steps. Easy and light to hold as you vacuum awkward places.
Granted, we have less expensive carpeting, but it looks better than it has in some time.
There is NO carpet height adjustments for this model, so if you have very plush carpeting, you may or may not like it as much. I can't say, since our carpeting is not that plush.
No headlight. Who cares! I always thought that was a useless feature anyway. Who vacuums in the dark?
BAGLESS! Just remove the canister and dump out its contents. Uses the same 'tornado' action as the big boys.
Only ONE FILTER. I find this to be a great thing. Many of our previous vacuums had 2-4 filters of different types. If any of them became too filthy, suction would suffer.
This vacuum has only ONE filter. Easy to get to. Just remove the canister and there it is. Unclip it and take it outside and shake it out. You can EVEN WASH IT! I sprayed it down with my garden hose and it looks and works as good as new. (CAUTION: NEVER PLACE A WET FILTER INSIDE AN ELECTRIC VACUUM FOR FEAR OF ELECTRICAL SHOCK). I let it dry for several hours before placing it back in the vacuum.
The vacuum is only about a foot wide. It is very easy to store. Simply press a button and the extendable handle will retract, making it very easy to fit into a closet.
There are a few small faults, of sorts.
As I said, the vacuum has no carpet height adjustments. I don't know if that will affect its performance on heavier carpeting.
The wheels are very small. Doesn't bother me. Maybe a little harder to push.
The filter needs cleaning often. If you don't, you will lose the suction quickly. Then again, that is the case with all vac filters, I think. Some of our previous vacs had 3-4 filters. It was a pain just to get to them all, much less remember to periodically clean them.
I may pick up another one or two at this price and save them for future use. I don't think I'll ever buy an expensive vac again.
