| sybilb1's Full Review: Eureka Enviro Steamer 370 Upright Vacuum |
I was so pleased to see the Eureka vacuum cleaner on sale for $99.00 at Bed Bath and Beyond a little more than one year ago! I purchased the
last one they had for sale. It was on display right at a time when I needed to purchase a new vacuum because the one I owned previously (from Sears) for eighteen years needed replacement. It had done a good job and was worn out. I was thrilled to see the Eureka was environmentally sound and came with a high recommendation. However, when I got it home and put it together, it smoked when I ran it. Apparently, the band inside was not the correct size. I received excellent service over the phone. I was instructed to not return it to the store where I had purchased the vacuum. I took the part to a dealer and they ordered a new band for me.
What followed was an situation which provoked frustration. Every time I used the vacuum, it clogged and I had to take it apart to find the problem in order to go on with my task. Granted, I did not take the vacuum back to the dealer which I am forced to do now. I have a busy schedule and work two jobs. My husband was using the Eureka and not taking it apart, so it was working 25% of the time without clogs. Eventually I attributed the problem to not enough amps (this one operates with 12 amps)and to a problem of too much cat hair. I believe I am going to have to get an industrial strength vacuum for the cat hair in my place. Between the model being an upright and not enough amps, I believe that the vacuum doesn't have enough strength for the amount of cat hair I had to deal with (three cats for a period of eight months).
With all of that said, I can still recommend this product to people without pets. I'm sure this vacuum is well within the bounds of being up to the challenge of ordinary dirt. I've heard that it's important not to breath unfiltered vacuum cleaner dust and the HEPA filter really does the job. If I take my vacuum to the dealer and find that my particular one is defective and it is not this model but a fluke, I will of course revise this opinion.(See revised information below, please.) In the meantime, pet owners, buy a higher amperage for vacuuming up pet hair. I will say for others without pets, the Eureka is easy to use, easy to store, easy to dissemble.
The latest information I have to add, as of early August 2000, is that this model needs a regular servicing, according to the dealer. The reason for this is owing to the long hose, the length causing the dirt to clog in one of two places, either near the brush in the curve or at the high end of the hose near the bag. The cost for the servicing was $19.95 (perhaps more or less in other areas of the country)and the amount of time needed to complete the servicing was one week. The servicing promises to return the vacuum to its normal suction capacity. I was also advised that perhaps part of my trouble was due to the type of carpet I have. I suppose I must take this into consideration the next time I purchase carpet. I would go with Eureka for excellence, a higher amperage for cat hair and an easier model (though perhaps heavier to carry around) for servicing and leave this model to non-pet owners at this time.
